Five of family killed in road mishap in Sabarkantha

Sabarkantha, August 10: Five members of a family including three children were killed after head-on collision between a Tata Sumo and a truck in the Modasa taluka of the district today, police said.

Six others were injured in the incident which took place near Gaajan village of Modasa, where a Tata Sumo carrying a family returning from Ajmer and going towards their native in Nashik in Maharashtra, collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction, they said.

One held for stealing diamonds, cash

Mumbai, August 10: In a case in which a complainant turned out to be the culprit, police have arrested a diamond agent for allegedly decamping with diamonds and cash belonging to merchants, police said here today.

The accused identified as Mansukh Seledia (47), a resident of suburban Dahisar, has been arrested yesterday after police probe revealed that he fabricated the story to steal the valuables, they added.

Seledia was in need of money as he suffered lose of Rs 10 lakh in the share market, police said.

Woman killed in road mishap

New Delhi, August 10: A 32-year-old woman, the wife of an Indian Meteorological Department official, was killed in an accident in south Delhi, police said today. The mishap took place in Safdarjung of south Delhi at around 11.45 pm.

Dinesh Chand Gupta, the IMD official, along with his wife Nirmala Gupta was going towards his house in Andrews Ganj after shopping on a scooter when a truck bearing Haryana registration hit their scooter from behind, police said. Nirmala died on the spot.

Two arrested for theft of rare monkeys from West Bengal zoo

Kolkata, August 10: Two security guards at the Alipur zoo were arrested Monday for their alleged involvement in the stealing of Brazilian monkey Sunday.
“We’ve arrested two security guards, Ashok Patra of Hooghly district and Shyam Sundar Ghosh of South 24 Parganas’ Sonarpur area, who were on duty that night to take care of the enclosure,” Kolkata Police deputy commissioner (port division) Asit Pal said.

Eight rare Brazilian monkeys were found mysteriously stolen from Kolkata’s famous Alipore Zoological Garden Sunday morning.

Chhattisgarh youth held for obscene MMS

Raipur, August 10: The Chhattisgarh police Monday arrested a 17-year-old youth for allegedly abducting a 16-year-old girl colleague and making an obscene video clip of hers.
The MMS clip was shot at a hotel July 30 but police complaint was registered Aug 9 and the accused Vinay Verma was held Monday, police said.

“Vinay had taken the girl in a car and took her to a hotel and forcibly prepared her MMS, and then started blacking her,” N. Siddiqui, in charge of Tarbahar police station of Bilaspur town, told reporters.

One died, 14 injured in mishap

Barnala, August 10: One person was killed and 14 others were injured following a head on collision between a roadways bus of Bathinda depot and a truck on Sangrur- Bathinda highway near here today. The bus conductor Beant Singh died on the spot, while two persons sustained serious injuries and were referred to a Patiala Hospital, police said.

The truck driver managed to escape, police said adding that a case has been registered in this regard.

Mumbai Police arrest eight, seize 103 kgs of charas

Mumbai, August 10: In a major drug haul, police claimed to have seized 103 kgs of charas worth over Rs one crore from the city and arrested eight persons in this connection. Investigations are on to find out how much of the seized contrabrand was meant for the city.

Preliminary probe suggests the contraband was brought here from Jammu & Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh,” Additional Police Commissioner (Anti-Terrorism Squad) Parambir Singh said. “We are trying to find out if the charas was meant to be supplied to other cities in Maharashtra and neighbouring states via Mumbai,” he said.

2 more bodies recovered; Pithoragarh cloudburst toll 23

Dehradun, August 10: Two more bodies were recovered from the debris today, taking the toll in the Pithoragarh cloudburst that triggered a massive landslide to 23 even as the administration continued its search operation for another 20 people. With the recovery of two more bodies, the toll in the landslide in three villages of Munsyari tehsil of the district has risen to 23, District Magistrate of Pithoragarh Narayan Singh Negi said.

27 Uttar Pradesh policemen got jobs on fake degrees

Lucknow, August 10:Police in Allahabad have unearthed a scam within their forces in which it was found that at least 27 serving policemen had acquired fake educational degrees to get their jobs, officials said.

The scam came to light after the police earlier this week found out that an institution was involved in selling fake marksheets and various educational degrees.

3 kids die after ‘eating chicken’

Ludhiana, August 10: In what is being seen as an incident of suspected food poisoning, three children died here yesterday after eating chicken at home on Friday night. Surprisingly, the family did not lodge any police complaint and buried the children yesterday.

For want of any medical investigation into the deaths of the children, as the family had buried the children soon after they died, the exact cause of the death of the the three — Sooraj (3) and Deepak (4) and eldest daughter Soni (5) — could not be ascertained.

Uttar Pradesh teenager alleges police brutality

Lucknow, August 10: A Class 11 student in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district had a nightmarish experience with the police when his motorcycle accidentally hit a woman’s car. He claims he was accused of sexual harassment, beaten up and paraded half-naked on the streets.

On Sunday, the teenager was injured when he accidentally rammed his motorcycle into a woman’s car in Baraut town in Baghpat, some 350 km from here. This led to a heated argument between the boy and the young woman.

Bank says it gave loan, man says no

Lucknow, August 10: A man has issued a legal notice to a private bank in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district after the bank claimed that his uncle, who migrated to Pakistan in 1947, has been given a loan. However, the nephew says his uncle never received the loan.

Firoz has alleged that the bank employees have forged documents to sanction a loan to his uncle Hamid, who is a Pakistani national.

43 people killed in landslides in northern India

Lucknow, August 10: Landslides triggered by heavy rains killed at least 43 people in three remote villages in northern India, a police official said.

Twenty bodies were pulled from the debris Sunday after the landslide buried the villages in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand state a day earlier, said S.M. Shamim, a paramilitary force commander.

He said 43 people “were buried alive under the debris.”

Police and volunteers were digging through mud and rocks Sunday to recover the bodies of 23 others, he said.

Afghan student dies in Chandigarh road accident

Chandigarh, August 10: A 21-year-old Afghan who was studying in a college here was killed when a speeding car hit him while he was crossing the road, police said Monday.

Ahmed Jawid had come to India just a month back and was pursuing a Bachelors degree at at the Government College in Sector 11. He was staying in a hostel and was returning after watching a movie with his friends Sunday when the accident took place, a police official said.

Dreaded criminal arrested in Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur, August 10: A dreaded criminal carrying a reward of Rs 5,000 on his head was arrested today by a special team of Lucknow police.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of STF Lucknow arrested Subhash Sharma hailing from Khajni area of the district.

Sharma was wanted in many cases of loot and murder attempt including in the recent attack on a sub-inspector here and snatching his revolver, police said.

Man arrested for child trafficking

Paradip, August 10: A person was today arrested on the charge of child trafficking for attempting to take 13 minors from Orissa”s Jagatsinghpur district to Mumbai for engaging them as bonded labourers. The accused has been identified as Hemanta Barik of Bilaspur village in Patkura area of Kendrapara district.

Barik was allegedly carrying the children in an autorickshaw to board a bus at Tirtol. On his way to the railway station at Cuttack he came under the notice of some locals who informed the police.

Two WR suburban trains collide in Mumbai

Mumbai, August 09: Six persons were injured after a local train collided with a stationary train at Mahim station of Western Railway following a signal failure this afternoon.

A Borivali-bound train stationed at platform No 1 at the Mahim station was hit by another train which was going to Andheri after there was a failure in signal control, Western railway officials said.

“Six persons who were travelling in the Borivali-bound train have suffered minor bruises. They have been administered first aid by the railway doctor at Mahim,” they said.

Honour killing? Lovers’ bodies found hanging with injury marks

Chandigarh, August 09:Bodies of young lovers were found hanging from a tree with injury marks on their knees at a village in Jhajjar district and police are investigating if it is a case of honour killing.

Police said the lovers had eloped from their houses in Subana village a few days ago and a complaint was registered against 22-year-old Sandeep on August 5, Jhajjar police chief Saurabh Singh said.

Asked if it was a case of honour killing he said they were investigating the case from all angles. “Things will become clear once we get the post-mortem and forensic report.”

Bomb blast on railway tracks

Guwahati, August 09:A bomb exploded on a railway track causing minor damage to a stationary goods train in Assam’s Goalpara district, official sources said.

The bomb was planted on the railway track at Harimura and it exploded this afternoon when a goods train was stationed there. The blast was of minor intensity.

Railway personnel have repaired tracks and train services resumed.

Meanwhile, security along the railway tracks have been beefed up and patrolling intensified in the run-up to the Independence Day, sources added.

BPO employee held for raping colleague in Delhi

New Delhi, August 09:A 28-year-old employee of a call centre was arrested here Sunday after his junior colleague accused him of giving her a sedative in cold drink and raping her in west Delhi, the police said.

The 27-year-old victim in her complaint at the Paschim Vihar police station alleged that her colleague Prashant Rana gave her a cold drink spiked with some sedative substance after they got down from their call centre cab late Friday near her house in Jwala Hedi market.

CPCB to inspect dyeing units in Ludhiana

Chandigarh, August 09:The Central Pollution Control Board will inspect all the 17 large scale dyeing units in Ludhiana by September 15 to ascertain the extent of compliance of pollution norms prescribed by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB).

A decision to this effect was taken by CPCB Chairman S P Gautam during a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here today, an official spokesman said.

The complete information relating to these 17 industrial units would be provided by the Chairman of Vardhman Group S P Oswal to the CPCB Chairman to facilitate inspection.

Three arrested for looting people

New Delhi, August 09:With the arrest of three persons, police today claimed to have busted a gang involved in looting passengers in a ‘tonga’ in the capital.

The persons have been identified as Ayub (51) of Delhi, Shahdat Hussain (40) and Sahiruddin from Badayun in UP, police said.

They had looted one Pradeep Kumar Mangal near New Delhi Railway Station on August one. Mangal had boarded a rickshaw and when he reached Near Delite Cinema, the rickshaw puller told that the vehicle is out of order and shifted his luggage in a ‘tonga’.

Old woman murdered in Bangalore

Bangalore, August 09:A 78 year-old woman was found murdered near a hotel in the city today, police said.

The deceased identified as Lourd Mary was found with her head crushed, they said.

The old woman, who was staying alone in Vijayanagar area, is survived by three sons and six daughters.

A complaint was filed by the deceased’s son Uday Kumar.

“It is not murder for gain as the gold jewellery Mary was wearing was found intact,” police said. PTI

5 cops suspended for beating mentally challenged man

Ranchi, August 09:The Jharkhand police Sunday suspended five policemen for beating a mentally challenged youth in a hospital in Dumka district, police said.

“Five policemen, including one sub-inspector, have been suspended for beating a mentally challenged youth in a hospital in Dumka district,” said a police official in Ranchi.

“Explanation has been sought from the suspended policemen,” he said.

On Saturday, five policemen beat up a mentally challenged man, Ramvilas Thakur, 30, the police official here said.
