Equipments worth Rs 1 crore damaged in fire

Burdwan, August 26: Equipments, including transformers, worth more than Rs 1 crore have been damaged at a power sub-station in Guskora area of Burdwan district, sources said today.

The fire, which started late last night, was brought under control with the help of 2 fire tenders, they said.

As a result of the incident, power supply has also been affected in the area.

Police quiz Kolkata resort officials after arms seizure

Kolkata, August 26: Police Wednesday quizzed top officials of a luxury resort vandalised by a mob as a senior West Bengal Left Front minister demanded the arrest of the resort authorities for arms and bombs found on its premises on the north eastern fringes of the city.

The authorities of the premier resort – Vedic Hotels and Resorts – however, denied involvement of any of their employees in Sunday’s violence when a 21-year-old youth was fired upon by some “antisocial elements” incensed over their team bowing out of a local soccer tournament.

Steel trader robbed of Rs.12 lakh in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, August 26: A steel trader was robbed of Rs.12 lakh in cash by four armed men here Wednesday, police said.

The incident occurred Wednesday evening in the Raj Nagar locality under Kavi Nagar police station in Ghaziabad.

“Sanjiv Kumar Gupta had just returned to his house and parked the car when three men came to him and at gunpoint robbed a briefcase containing Rs.12 lakh in cash, which was kept in the car boot,” a police officer said.

“The fourth man was on the motorcycle outside,” the police officer added.

Steel trader robbed of Rs.12 lakh in Ghaziabad

Panel to probe ragging incident in Punjab nursing college

Chandigarh, August 26: Two days after some girls of a nursing college in Punjab’s Jalandhar city accused their seniors of ragging, the state government ordered a probe into the matter Wednesday.
First year students of DAV Nursing College in Jalandhar, some 150 km from here, had filed a complaint against their seniors, complaining of ragging.

Punjab Medical Education and Research Minister Tikshan Sud Wednesday constituted a three-member committee to thoroughly look into the complaint.

Sud has directed the committee to submit its detailed report within a week.

Guj police to probe Aslam’s role in Ahmedabad station blast

Ahmedabad, August 26: Gujarat police will investigate the role of Mohammad Aslam alias Salim who was arrested in New Delhi yesterday, in the Ahmedabad railway station blast that took place in February 2006, police officials said today.

“Once the investigation of the Delhi police is over, we will probe the role of Aslam in the blast at the city railway station in February 2006,” state Anti-terrorist Squad (ATS) chief Ajay Tomar told PTI.

“We may also request for his custody from the Delhi police but only after their investigation is over,” he added.

Lecturer suspended in connection with ragging incident

Thiruvananthapuram, August 26: A lecturer of a private college in Thrissur district has been suspended for allegedly trying to hush up the ragging of a physically challenged student last week and not informing the college princpal and police.

Acording to an official press release today, action against R Sunil Kumar, Mathamatics lecturer of the Sree Rama Polytechnic at Thirprayar, was taken on the basis of complaints that he had sought to settle the issue without informing the proper authorities of the incident.

Rains lash many parts in North, 15 killed in UP, Bihar

New Delhi, August 26: Fifteen people lost their lives in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh today due to floods and rain related incidents, while heavy showers drenched many parts of the Northern region.

While moderate to heavy showers lashed several parts of the national capital, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, people in Punjab and Haryana sweated it out in the absence of monsoon rains.

Spl CBI court awards RI to 21 fodder convicts

Ranchi, August 26: A special CBI court today sentenced 21 fodder scam convicts, including two former directors, to rigorous imprisonment upto seven years.

Former regional directors of the Animal Husbandry Department Junul Bhengraj and K N Jha were sentenced to six and five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs ten lakh and Rs five lakh respectively.

The court of A H Ansari also awarded prison terms between three and seven years to 19 others, who include government officials and suppliers.

A fine amount between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 25 lakh was also slapped against them.

Howrah-Nagpur train traffic disrupted

Nagpur, August 26: The ongoing naxal violence in Jharkhand has affected the Howarah-Nagpur train route, according to Nagpur division of Central Railway.

Train number 2834 Howrah-Ahmedabad Express which was scheduled to depart on August 25 and reach here today has been cancelled.

Similarly train number 8030 Shalimar-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express, train number 2810 Howrah-Mumbai Mail and train number 2130 Howrah-Pune Azad Hind Express which were scheduled to arrive today have been cancelled, an official release said today.

Two criminals arrested

Noida, August 26: Two criminals were arrested cash worth Rs 4.10 lakh recovered from them, police said today.

According to SP (City) AK Tripathi, on Tuesday a contractor Mohammad Ansar was robbed of Rs 5.80 lakhs by bikers from sector 44 area and investigations revealed that the robbery was planned by one of the employee who knew about his movement.

Dhan Singh and Mahesh Kumar were arrested while Sunil Kumar was absconding. A manhunt has been launched to arrest the third accused.

Wild tusker electrocuted

Baripada, August 26: A wild tusker was electrocuted after it came in contact with a high voltage power line in Mayurbhanj district of Orissa, official sources said here today.

The elephant, aged about 30 years, was roaming in Karanjia area, about 120 km from here, when its trunk came in contact with an electric wire late last night, they said.

After the elephant’s body was spotted this morning, senior forest department officials rushed to the area.

Local residents expressed concern over the low height of the electricity lines .

Shutdown in Balochistan to mourn Bugti; 10 killed in violence

Islamabad, August 26: At least 10 people were killed in sporadic violence as life in most parts of Pakistan’s restive southwestern Balochistan province was hit today by a strike called to mark the third death anniversary of nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti, who died in a military operation.

Shops were closed and traffic stayed off the roads due to the shutdown called by Bugti’s Jamhoori Watan Party and Baloch National Front. It was backed by other Baloch nationalist parties. Special prayers were also organised for Bugti, former governor and chief minister of the energy-rich province.

Girl sustains injuries after man throws acid on her

New Delhi, August 26: A 16-year-old girl suffered injuries when a man allegedly threw acid at her in east Delhi after she turned down his plea for marrying her, police said today.

The incident was reported from near a gurudwara in Geeta Colony this morning.

Suhana, a Class XII student in a government school, was attacked allegedly by Deepak when she was going to a coaching centre, police said.

Deepak and his friend Sanjeev had gone to her residence yesterday and told her parents about the former’s liking for the girl, they said.

Zambian national arrested with heroin worth Rs 40 lakh

Mumbai, August 26: Customs authorities today arrested a Zambian national, Gidbon Mwale, from city’s international airport for the alleged smuggling of heroin worth Rs 40 lakh in international market.

Mwale was arrested when he was proceeding to board a Lusaka-bound Ethiopian Airlines flight via Adis Ababa, a Mumbai Customs press release said.

The heroin, weighing around 400 gms, was concealed under the hard plastic covering of the puller handle of a black-coloured suitcase, the release said.

The passenger has been arrested and further investigations are going on, the release said.

Two held for throwing acid on minor girl in Delhi

New Delhi, August 26: Two people were arrested Wednesday for allegedly throwing acid on a minor girl in east Delhi, police said.
“The incident took place around 8 a.m. Wednesday in Geeta Colony area. The 16-year-old victim was going to tuition when they threw acid on her,” a senior police officer said.

“Sanjay and Deepak have been arrested while the third accomplice is absconding. He will be arrested very soon,” the police officer added.

“The girl was rushed to Hedgewar Hospital. She has suffered 18 percent burn injuries,” the police officer added.

Leopard kills girl in Rajouri

Jammu, August 26: A teen age girl was killed by a leopard in Rajouri district, 215 kilometres from here today, police officials said.

The 13-year-old girl Rifat had gone to fetch water from a spring in Manjakote area of Rajouri this afternoon, when a leopard attacked her and dragged her to forest belt, they said.

As the girl cried, people rushed to spot forcing the leopard to flee from the spot, they said adding that she was taken to a hospital in a critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The body was handed over to the family for burial, they said.

Dalit woman’s gang-rape; constable?s son among four picked up

Allahabad, August 26: Four youths, including a constable?s son, were picked up by the police here today for interrogation in connection with the gangrape and murder of a young dalit woman on the outskirts of the city two days ago.

“We have picked up four youths for interrogation in connection with the brutal sexual assault and subsequent killing of 22-year-old Rita, whose body was found lying near a railway track in Dhoomanganj police station area last night”, police spokesman Mrityunjay Kumar Mishra said.

Six killed in road mishap

Medininagar, August 26: Six persons were killed and 14 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck at Kandaghati on Medininagar-Panta Road this afternoon.

While three persons died on the spot, three others succumbed either on way to hospital or during treatment, Deputy Superintendent of Police Braj Mohan Paswan, told newsmen.

The mishap occurred at Kandaghati on the route, about 32 km from here, in the afternoon.

The bus was heading to Aurangabad in Bihar from Medininagar.

Couple hacks daughter, lover

Lakhimpur, August 26: Enraged over their daughter’s alleged illicit relations, a couple today hacked their daughter and her boy friend to death in Pasgawan town here, police said.

Accused Idrish alongwith his wife hacked their 18-year old daughter and her boy friend with axe this morning and later surrendered before the police with the weapon, they said.

Idrish and his wife had gone somewhere, when neighbour’s son Irfan visited their house police said adding that when the couple returned, they found Irfan in an objectionable situation with their daughter Afsana.

Vaishnodevi pilgrim dies in J&K

Jammu, August 26: A woman pilgrim from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh died of a heart attack today on her way to the cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi, police said.

45-year-old Kalwanti Devi, breathed her last at Adhkuwari about 55 Kms from here, they said.

Her body has been handed over to her family.

One more accused in NMGB branch robbery held

Kannur, August 26: One more person was arrested today in connection with the recent Rs 4.54 crore bank heist in neighbouring Kasaragod District.

Haneefa (38), part of the seven-member gang involved in the June 18 burglary of the North Malabar Gramin Bank’s Periye branch, was arrested here, Kanhangad DySP Habeeb Rahman said.

Rahman, incharge of investigations into the case, said police were expecting to arrest other gang members shortly.

The gang had struck at bank and decamped with pledged gold jewels weighing 33 KG worth about Rs 4.47 crore and cash to the tune of 6.74 lakhs.

Baby survives Mumbai building collapse

Mumbai, August 26: An 85-year-old woman, who was seriously injured when a portion of a four-storey residential building collapsed in south Mumbai, has died but a 25-day-old baby miraculously survived over 20 hours.

Yusuf Manzil at Lamington Road caved in last evening after one of its main pillars, weakened by unauthorised construction by a shop on the ground floor of the building, collapsed, fire brigade officials said.

Maoists kill villager, injure trooper in Jharkhand

Ranchi, August 26: A villager was killed and a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper injured in a Maoist attack on the outskirts of this Jharkhand capital, police said Wednesday.

Around 100 Maoist rebels attacked a police picket in Bundu block on the outskirts here late Tuesday. ‘The guerrillas and security personnel were in a fire fight for nearly three hours,’ a police officer said.

‘In the cross fire, a villager was killed and one CRPF jawan was injured. The injured CRPF jawan has been admitted to Apollo hospital here,’ the officer said.

Mumbai, August 26: An 85-year-old woman, who was seriously injured when a portion of a four-storey residential building collapsed in south Mumbai, has died. The building,”Yusuf Manzil” at Lamington Road caved in last evening after one of its main pillars weakened due to unauthorised construction work carried out by a shop on the ground floor of the building, fire brigade officials said.
