2 jawans killed in terror attack near J&K assembly

Srinagar, August 31: Two CRPF personnel were killed and eight people injured in twin attacks by militants in the crowded Lal Chowk and Batmaloo areas of the city, barely half a kilometre from the assembly on Monday afternoon.

Armed with guns and grenades, the militants struck almost simultaneously at around 1 PM when the Jammu and Kashmir assembly went for a recess after completing the morning session, officials said.

Militants shot two CRPF jawans of 28th battalion in the head from point blank range outside a bank at Lal Chowk, Srinagar’s nerve centre, sparking panic in the city.

One CRPF jawan died, another injured in Srinagar attack

Srinagar, August 31: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was killed and another was wounded critically when militants fired on them in the heart of the city this afternoon.

Official sources told UNI that militants fired from close range on two CRPF jawans on patrol duty on VVIP route, leading to Civil Secretariat and Legislative Assembly, near Budshah Chowk here.

The injured were shifted to a hospital where one was declared dead.

A CRPF spokesman Prabhakhar Tripathi told UNI that Raj Shekher and Malik Arjun of 28 Battalion CRPF were critically wounded in the attack.

Four run over by lorry

Coimbatore, August 31: Four persons, including a woman and a two-year-old child, were killed on the spot when a water tanker lorry mowed them down at Kannappan Nagar here today.

All the deceased were standing at a bus stop when the lorry ran over them after the driver lost control of the vehcile while taking a turn, police said.

History-sheeter hacked to death

Sivakasi, August 31: A history-sheeter was hacked to death by a five-member gang following an altercation during a marriage function here,police said today.

Police said the 36-year-old V Kannan had a quarrel with the gang while taking food.The gang members pulled out a sickle and hacked at Kannan, killing himon the spot, police said.

Police said Kannan was involved in several criminal cases since 1999.

While one gangster was arrested, the others are absconding.

Two girls suffocated to death in car

Azamagarh, August 31: Two minor girls were suffocated to death in a car which got locked from inside in Paharpur area here, police said.

The cousin sisters, aged four and two years, were playing in the car when it accidently got locked, police said.

The family members, who were unaware that the girls had sneaked out to play, came to know of the incident about six hours later, they said.

Couple commits suicide

Muzaffarnagar, August 31: A woman along with her paramour allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Hasanpur village in Saharanpur district, police said today.

Satpal, a 22-year-old bachelor, was in love with 32-year-old married Punam. The two took the extreme step after their families objected to their relationship, police said.

Three killed in road accident

Bangalore, August 31: Three people were killed on the spot and 10 others injured when a minibus in which they were travelling collided with a state transport bus at Gubbi in Tumkur district of Karnataka today.

Police said they were returning from Badravathi when the accident occurred.

The deceased were identified as Nagendra Rao, Krishnoji Rao and Jaya Bai. The injured were admitted to hospital here.

3 youth killed in car-truck collision

Rajgarh, August 31: Three people were killed on the spot when a truck collided head-on with their car on the Agra-Mumbai Highway five km from near this district’s Bioara town this morning, police said.

Alim Sheikh (25), Mohammad Azim and Pankaj Sindhi were on their way to Mumbai after paying obeisance at Vaishno Devi temple at Jammu. The victims died in the accident.

The truck driver was absconding.

2 criminals killed in police encounter

Ghaziabad, August 31: Police today gunned down two criminals who allegedly fled in a vehicle of a doctor here after threatening him. The two unidentified outlaws in their 20s, beat up a doctor around 2.30 AM today and took away his car, SSP Ghaziabad Akhil Kumar said.

Following a complaint by the doctor, the police swung into action and challenged them, he said adding that in the exchange of fire the duo was killed. Some arms were recovered from the spot.

A policeman was injured in the encounter and was rushed to hospital, he said.

Youth washed away, still to be traced: Police

Mumbai, August 31: An 18-year-old youth from Manor in Thane district was washed away in the Vaitarna river where he had gone to immerse the Ganpati idol last evening on the seventh day of the festival, a delayed report reaching the district police headquarters here said today.

The boy has been identified as Shiv Dashrath Dalvi and added that he had gone along with several other villagers for the immersion in the river.

A search was launched both by the villagers and the police but till late this evening the body was not recovered, police said.

Cameroon train crashes kill 11, injure hundreds

Cameroon, August 31: Cameroon’s state-run television says two train crashes within 24 hours have killed at least 11 people.

Minister of Communication Issa Tchiroma Bakary told the broadcaster today that nearly 400 people were injured in the crashes in the capital Yaounde.

A petroleum-loaded cargo train collided with another train Friday morning in southwestern Yaounde. Two firefighters were killed when four petroleum tankers exploded. More than 100 people were injured.

Bomb threat at two railway stations

Mumbai, August 31: A bomb threat was received tonight following which search operations were being carried out at two suburban railway stations in the city, police said here.

An anonymous call was received by police claiming that explosives were planted at Andheri and Mumbai Central railway stations.

The bomb detection and disposal squad teams were pressed into service and search operations were still on, police added.

Georai, August 31: Police have registered a case against a former minister’s son for allegedly assaulting the employees of District Credit Co-operative Bank.

The accused assaulted bank employees saying that they were refusing loan to his party workers.

Georai police have registered a case of atrocity against and are investigating further.

5 children die of Encephalitis, toll rises to 210

Gorakhpur, August 31: With five more children succumbing to encephalitis, the total toll in the division due to the disease has mounted to 210, officials sources said.

Five more children have died due to encephalitis at BRD Medical College here, while 145 patients are being treated during the last 24 hours, Additional Director Health L P Rawat said, adding 22 fresh cases were admitted in different hospitals.

Death of four persons in Aurangabad creates panic

Aurangabad, August 31: The mysterious death of four persons in the city today created panic among people here.

These four persons found lying dead in a gutter (nullah) on the Osmanpura-MIT College road today.

The cause of the deaths is not yet ascertained but people in the accompanying residential areas are panicked with the deaths.

Four people died in the Marathwada region due to swine flu, recently. Aurangabad Municipal Corporation officers have not yet taken cognizance of the incident as it was holiday today (Sunday).

Illegal blood transfusion in Raj district; probe ordered

Jaipur, August 30: A laboratory owner was arrested for allegedly collecting blood from donors without proper tests and supplying it to a nursing home in Rajasthan’s Sriganganagar district, even as the government ordered a probe into the case amid charges that the blood was HIV infected.

Police said a complaint was registered with Anoopgarh police station in Sriganganagar district, 484 km form here, on August 26 accusing a laboratory and a nursing home of transfusing HIV infected blood to patients.

Goods train carrying naphtha catches fire in Kutch

Ahmedabad, August 30: Over 13 naphtha-filled containers of a goods train were engulfed in fire after one of the containers derailed near Shivlakha village of Kutch district this evening, police said.

The incident occurred near Lakadia railway station in Rapar taluka of Kutch district, when one of the containers filled with naphtha derailed causing fire, they said, adding there were no casualties so far.

“The goods train carrying inflammable naphtha-filled containers was coming from Palanpur and going towards Gandhidham when it caught fire,” police inspector M R Godaniya told PTI.

Girl commits suicide after not getting admission in LSR

Gurgaon, August 30: In a shocking incident, a girl committed suicide after failing to secure admission in a renowned college of Delhi.

The girl Kritika Khanna (19) took the extreme step of jumping from the 11th floor of DLF City’s Regency Park, where she used to stay, police said.

According to the sources, the girl was in tension after she didn’t get admission in Lady Sri Ram College (LSR) in Delhi despite securing 92 per cent in intermediate.

It is noteworthy here that the victim’s father is an engineer and mother a teacher at Sri Ram School in Gurgaon.

Bid to abduct autorickshaw owner failed, two held

Jharkhand, August 30: Two persons were arrested while making an abortive attempt to abduct an autorickshaw owner and his cleaner in Palamu district today.

The abductors wanted to demand ransom from the autorickshaw owner’s father-in-law who recently received a fair amount of money after retiring from government service, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Braj Mohan Paswan said.

Posing as passengers, the abductors hired the autorickshaw driven by its owner, D K Dubey from here, the district headquarter, to Rajhara, about 14 kms away.

Man immolates self after losing job

New Delhi, August 30: A 26-year-old unemployed man allegedly set himself on fire in a park near Humayun’s Tomb in south-east Delhi early this morning, police said.

The victim has been identified as Gaurav Kumar, a resident of Savitri Nagar.

According to police, he took the extreme step as he lost his job a few months back. Kumar had done a computer course and was a clerk with a private company.

Kumar had driven into the MCD Park near Humayun’s Tomb around 2.15 am. He was allegedly carrying two plastic bottles containing kerosene oil.

Son kills mother on trivial issue in Dharmabad

Nanded, August 30: A 35-year-old youth allegedly killed his mother on a petty issue of sending his wife to her parents house without asking him.

He also injured his son, who is hospitalized.

Police said the incident took place in Shankargunj locality of Dharmabad today.

Satish Hake attacked his mother Shakuntala with razor blade and other sharp weapon and allegedly killed her on the spot, police said.

When his nine-year-old son Manish tried to intervene, he also attacked him.

Manish had been hospitalized. Shakuntala died on the spot.

Seven arrested for dealing in fake currency in AP

Rajahmundry, August 30: Seven persons have been arrested for allegedly dealing in fake currency in Eluru town in West Godavari district, police said today.

The gang, which was arrested last evening, used to exchange Rs one lakh fake currency for Rs 40,000. Rs 19 lakh worth fake notes have been seized from them,” they said.

The accused have been identified as Md Ameer Hussan, Ameer Mubarak, Hussain (all from Maladha District, West Bengal), Vikky Sharief and Pavan Sharif (Patna), Konala Venkata Sathyanarayana Reddy (Puducherry), and Oleti Kamaswara Rao (West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh).

Youth booked for rape in Nanded

Nanded, August 30: A youth who eloped with a 19 year old girl was booked under the rape charges.

Police have also registered a case against the parents of the accused for helping him in committing the crime.

Police said Sunil Parasram Aade (25) eloped with a 19 year old girl.

He lured her of marrying and raped her at his residence in city.

His father Parasram and mother Renukabai also helped him in the crime, police said.

Boy found dead in lock-up; probe ordered after protests

Jammu, August 30: The death of a 17-year-old boy in a lock-up, which police termed as a suicide, triggered protests here prompting the authorities to order a probe into the incident.

Police said Billoo of Ludhiana in Punjab, committed suicide by hanging in police lockup located en route to cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi at Adhkuwari, 58 Kms from here.

He was picked by police in a case of theft and pick-pocketing and taken to Adhkuwari police lockup for questioning in the morning.

The boy, as police said, hanged himself in the lockup.

A post-mortem was conducted.

Soothsayer, husband arrested for poisoning six children

Salem, August 30: A “soothsayer” and her husband have been arrested for allegedly poisoning six children in the last one and a half years by feeding them pesticide-mixed food at a village in Attur near here in a bid to gain fame and money, police said today.

The duo were arrested yesterday following an investigation into the ‘mysterious deaths’ of healthy children, aged between three and seven years, during this period, they said, adding postmortem reports confirmed that the children were poisoned.
