Health ministry official commits suicide in Delhi

New Delhi, September 02: A senior health ministry official was found Wednesday hanging from the fan in his home here, police said.

M.P. Singh, 49, who was posted as deputy director at Indian Council Of Medical Research (ICMR), was found in his Pragati Vihar hostel room in south Delhi’s Lodhi Colony around 9.30 a.m.

“Prima facie it seems that Singh has committed suicide. We have been told that he was under depression for the last few days,” a police official said.

Student crushed to death by train

Seoni, Septembet 02: An 18-year-old class XI student was crushed to death by Satpura Express when he was walking parallel to the railway track with his friend at this district’s Ghansore area, Government Railway Police said.

Kamlesh Durve, student of government school, slipped on the track while walking over Badhid bridge and was run over by the train.

Kamlesh was on his way back to his home at Nidhani village.

Army kills 5 infiltrators in J&K; 10 missing

Srinagar, September 02: Five terrorists were shot down by the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir while infiltrating into India on Wednesday.

The Indian Army acted on information that some terrorists had crossed the line of control (LoC) in Gurez sector of Bandipora district in Kashmir Valley.

While five terrorists were killed, the army’s search operation was on for the remaining 10 terrorists.

9-year-old boy sacrificed in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, September 02: A nine-year-old boy was mercilessly murdered, apparently in the name of god, in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh.

Hrithik, a resident of Muradnagar area, was sacrificed by a tantrik (one who practises black magic). Hrithik had gone to buy a chocolate on Sunday evening, but he never returned.

The panic stricken family of Hrithik registered a complaint with the police on Monday. Their worst fears were confirmed on Tuesday when Hrithik’s uncle discovered his body in the nearby fields.

Man lynched for killing minor servant in Jharkhand

Jharkhand, September 02: After Andhra Pradesh reported two consecutive cases of mob rule running amok, a similar incident took place in a village in Dumka district of Jharkhand.

A man, accused of killing his servant, was beaten to death in full public view and shockingly, in the presence of police on Tuesday.

Surjeet, who allegedly shot dead his 10-year-old domestic help in a fit of rage, was attacked by the agitated villagers at his residence.

In the heat of the moment, Surjeet apparently pulled out a pistol. Enraged, the villagers started beating him.

Andhra student dies in car accident in US

Washington, September 02: A 22-year-old student from Hyderabad was killed in a freak car accident in the US.

Naresh Dacha, first year MS (EE) student at Wright State University, was driving from his home to the university yesterday morning along with his friend Varun when his car hit a tree on Route 22 in Dayton, Ohio.

The incident happened around 5.30 am when Naresh hit the tree in an effort to save a cat.

Varun, who was in the front passenger’s seat, is safe with minor injuries, said Prasad Thotakura, president-elect of Telugu Association of North America (TANA).

Auto driver held for duping woman from Philippines

Bangalore, September 02: An autorickshaw driver has been arrested for allegedly taking away belonging of a woman from the Philippines, police said here today.

Sajjad Ahmed, 24, was arrested for taking away the baggage of Makeme Mariah Ido, who hired his auto to take that to a lodge in the city last week.

Ido, who came here from Hyderabad, had put her luggage in Sajjad’s auto while she followed in another three-wheeler, but the accused fled with the luggage.

Based on information given by the driver of the second auto, police arrested Sajjad from Padarayanapura area here.

HC acquits a man sentenced to life imprisonment

New Delhi, September 01: The Delhi High court today exonerated a man sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly murdering his friend as the prosecution failed to prove his guilt.

A bench of Justices Pradeep Nandrajog and Indermeet Kaur acquitted Mohd. Ahmed as the police failed to establish the cause of death.

The court refused to give credence to CSFL report which had confirmed that the deceased died of poisoning allegedly by Ahmed after noting that there was a gap of one and half years since the report was given.

Four of family attempt suicide in city

Ahmedabad, September 01: Four members of a family including a nine-year-old boy allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poisonous substance in the Chankyapuri area of the city here today, police said.

The incident took place when one Mansukh Patel, along with his wife Majula and son Jignesh consumed some poisonous substance, they said.

According to police, Patel also made Ankit-9-, who is his brother’s son, comsume the substance.

Patel, before consuming the substance called up his relatives and informed them about what he was intending to do, they said.

ACB arrests forest officer in corruption case

Hyderabad, September 01: A section officer of the forest department was arrested on charges of corruption by the officers of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Nizamabad district today.

L Prasad, forest section officer, was caught red-handed by the ACB officials at his residence at Gayatri Nagar in Mudakpally when he accepted a bribe of Rs 4,000 from a complainant, a release from ACB said.

The tainted amount of Rs 4,000 which was kept in the refrigerator was recovered, it said.

At least nine killed, 24 injured in bus mishap in HP

Sundernagar, September 01: At least nine passengers were killed and 24 others injured, when a private bus fell into a 100-metre deep gorge near Sundernagar sub-division of Mandi district late this evening, official sources said.

Nine dead bodies were recovered from the bus, while search operation is on, sources said.

The bus was on its way to Sundernagar from neighbouring Bilaspur district, when the mishap took place near Bhawana, about five kilometre from Sundernagar around 7.15 pm, sources added.

Maoists kill two villagers in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, September 01: Maoist guerrillas killed two villagers in Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon district Tuesday, accusing them of being police spies, police said.

Some 50 rebels, including several women, came to Bijepar village and killed the two, in their late 20s, in front of the other people, district police chief Praveer Das said.

Some villagers who tried to intervene were beaten up, he said, adding that police have launched a drive in the forested stretches around the village to apprehend the Maoists.

Rajnandgaon district, bordering Maharashtra, is 175 km from Raipur.

Nagpur police arrest five persons in gangrape case

Nagpur, September 01: The city police have arrested five persons including two teenaged boys in connection with a gangrape of a 27 year old married woman in MHADA colony, Jaripatka, police said today.

Police said the woman from Shivangaon on city outskirt who was abandoned by her husband was picked by one Deva Ramteke aged 21 years. She was kept at a room in MHADA colony where Deva first raped her and later by the four others.

The incident took place between Aug 20 to 31 and the victim lodged a complaint with police last night.

Lovers end life fearing village elders

Haryana, September 01: Two young lovers ended their lives in a suicide pact, fearing resistance to their affair from the village elders, police said here.

Ritu and her lover Jaildar hailed from village Bosti near Tohana in this district. Students of a local college, both were deeply in love with each other, they said.

“Perhaps because they belonged to the same village and because of the ‘bhaichara’ (brotherhood) which exists between the villagers, they feared that village elders will not approve their marriage and decided to end their lives,” a police official said.

Man killed by uprooted tree

Orissa, September 01: One person was killed after a tree fell on him at Gokarnapur under Digapahandi police station in Orissa’s Ganjam district today, police said.

The 52-year-old man S Aauntulu Dora was going to his farm land during heavy rain when an uprooted tree crushed him underneath.

Police and local people retrieved the body and post-mortam was conducted at the government hospital at Digapahandi, they said.

Lucknow, September 01: In a separate case, an FIR has been filed against Vibha Tewari, an accused in a PWD engineer’s murder case, for allegedly threatening a civic body officer while initiatives were underway to cancel her bail in the sensational case.

In a complaint to DGP Vikram Singh yesterday, executive officer of Nagar Panchayat, Auraiya, Prahlad Kashyap alleged that Vibha Tewari, now on bail in the engineer murder case, had been threatening him, ADG (law and order) A K Jain said.

Boy ‘sacrificed’ in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, September 01:The body of an eight-year-old boy was found here Tuesday with injuries and vermilion marks. The police suspect it to be a case of human sacrifice.

The body was discovered in an agricultural field, police said. The child, a student of Class 3, went missing Sunday evening when he left his home to buy biscuits.

According to police, the child was abducted Sunday evening and murdered that night by a man and three women. Various sacrificial rituals were also performed on the child.

Four men wanted for 211 murders arrested in Mexico

Ciudad Juarez (Mexico), September 01: Four men suspected of committing 211 murders in northern Mexico have been arrested, authorities said.

The killings occurred in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico’s most violent city, where the Juarez and Sinaloa drug cartels have been waging a turf war.

Cristian Enrique Franco Franco, 22, charged with killing 16 people, Edgar Flores Martinez, 30, who faces 87 murder counts, and Omar Castro Rivera, 28, who is suspected of killing 93 people, were arrested by the security forces.

Indian-origin designer Anand Jon gets 59 years for rape

Los Angeles/New Delhi, September 01:Indian-born fashion designer Anand Jon, convicted of sexually assaulting several girls and young women, has been sentenced to 59 years in prison by a Los Angeles court.

The designer, who appeared on the reality television show “America’s Next Top Model”, was Nov 16 convicted of 16 charges, including rape and sexual assault.

According to prosecutors, he enticed the girls, mostly aspiring models, with the promise of modelling jobs and forced them into sex, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Two Maoist rebels killed in Jharkhand

Ranchi, September 01:Two Maoist rebels were killed in a gunbattle with security personnel in Jharkhand’s Gumla district Tuesday, police said.

According to police, the gunbattle between security forces and Maoist rebels belonging to the People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI) took place in Sursang jungle, which comes under the Kamdera police station in Gumla district, some 140 km from Ranchi.

Police raided the Maoist hideout in the jungle on a tip-off. Five Maoist rebels started firing when police asked them to surrender.

Four arrested in murder case in Delhi

New Delhi, Septembet 01: Four persons were arrested for allegedly murdering a man who had teased the wife of one of their gang members here, police said today. Babloo (26), the leader of Chuhiya gang, Sachin (20), Satish (24) and Manoj (26) were arrested for the murder of Ajay Kumar on August 28 after he allegedly passed lewd remarks at Reena, wife of one Suraj, who is also a gang member.

14 people missing in landslide in eastern Nepal

Kathmandu, September 01: At least 14 people were missing and presumed dead after a landslide hit a remote village in western Nepal, police said Tuesday.

The landslide hit the village of Jaleswor in Khotang district, about 120 kilometres east of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, early Tuesday.

The victims were sleeping when their homes were swept away by falling mud, rock and other debris, police said.

Rescue teams were scouring the area but had not found any trace of the victims, district police in Khotang said.

12 injured as police cane charges protesting students

Srinagar, September 01: Twelve students were today injured after police resorted to cane charge as they tried to come out from their college and hold protests demanding setting up of a Central University here. A sweeper received severe injuries during the incident and has been hospitalised, official sources said.

Students of GGM Science College near Jewel Chowk boycotted their classes and held demonstrations on the college premises, the officials said. Thereafter, they tried to hold protests on the main road.

Maoist leader wanted for murder held

Lucknow, September 01: A Maoist leader wanted for killing policemen and exploding landmines in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh has been arrested in the forests of Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district, police said Tuesday.

Phaggu Kharwar was caught Monday evening after a gun fight in the dense Darma forests. Four of his aides escaped, district police chief Pritendra Singh told reporters.

Sonbhadra is about 250 km from Lucknow.

Investment papers worth Rs.72 lakh seized from Jharkhand bureaucrat

Ranchi, September 01: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths, who raided the houses of a senior civil servant in Jharkhand for his alleged involvement in a Rs.1.3 billion scam in the state’s health department, have seized investment documents worth at least Rs.72 lakh (Rs.7.2 million) from his possession.

These include Rs.47 lakh worth of fixed deposit documents, investment documents worth over Rs.25 lakh and documents of flats in New Delhi and Udaipur, informed sources said.
