Police disperse protestors with tear gas in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, September 25: Police in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Thursday used tear gas to disperse dozens of demonstrators gathered to protest the Group of 20 summit, media reports said.

Nearly 500 marchers, carrying anti-capitalist signs and wearing bandanas and gas masks, were warned in English and Spanish by police that they were not authorised to march into a certain area, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette newspaper reported.

Their path was blocked several times by riot police, dispersing part of the crowd and eventually the police fired tear gas on the remaining protestors.

Two arrested for killing youth

New Delhi, September 24: Two money-lenders were arrested in the national capital for allegedly murdering a youth after an argument over repayment of loan the victim had taken, police said today. Naresh Sharma (33) and Ritesh Verma (28) were caught yesterday for killing Bhupender (25) in Gandhi Nagar last week, Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Anand Mohan said.

On September 17, the duo along with others had attacked Bhupender at his friend Manish Aggarwal”s courier office in Gandhi Nagar. There were gunshot and nine stab wounds on the body of Bhupender.

ITI AGM dies after falling from train

Lucknow, September 24: A senior official of Indian Telephone Industry (ITI) was killed after falling from a moving train in Gonda district today, police said here. Assistant general manager at ITI Mankapur O N Shukla, who was going to Mumbai for a training by Kushinagar Express, fell from the moving train near Baruachak halt in the district, about 120 kms from the state capital, while talking on his mobile phone in the wee hours this morning, they said.

Police said the necessary action is being taken by the local GRP.

Two CPI-M activists killed in West Bengal district

Kolkata, September 24: Two villagers, believed to be supporters of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), were abducted and killed by suspected Maoist guerrillas late Wednesday night near Maoist-hit Lalgarh area in West Bengal, police said Thursday.

The incident took place at Goaltor area in West Midnapore district where Nemai Bishayi, 60, and Samir Singha Mahapatra, 50, were abducted and then killed by the Maoists when they were returning to their village.

‘Both the bodies were recovered from a nearby forest area this (Thursday) morning,’ said a police officer.

3 killed in road mishap

Jagdalpur, September 24: Three people, including two siblings, were killed and four injured critically, when their jeep dashed against a roadside tree near Sinchanpur village in Bastar district, police said today.

The Kanker-bound jeep via Jagdalpur hit the tree last night, killing Mohammad Imran (25), Mohammad Khasuque (26) and Ganeshram on the spot.

The injured were admitted to Kanker district hospital, police said.

Woman dies in Delhi, family alleges dowry death

New Delhi, September 24: The relatives of a 22-year-old woman who died in the national capital have alleged that the victim was killed by her in-laws for dowry, police said Thursday.

Deepti Sharma, mother of a girl, was admitted to a west Delhi hospital Wednesday by her in-laws where she died the same day, a police officer said.

14 die in chimney collapse at power plant in India

New Delhi, September 24: Rescuers used heavy cranes and saws to free more than a dozen people still trapped in the rubble of a large chimney that collapsed at a power plant under construction in central India, killing at least 14 people, police said Thursday.

R.K. Vij, inspector-general of police, revised the death toll to 14 from the figure of 20 that was given earlier by police, and said another seven people were hospitalized. All 14 bodies have been recovered.

Two killed, 18 injured in accident near Fatehpur Sikri

New Delhi, September 24: Two people were killed and 18 injured when a tanker carrying liquified petroleum gas (LPG) hit a tractor-trailer carrying more than 30 passengers close to Fatehpur Sikri, police said Thursday.

The incident occurred Wednesday.

Villagers immediately rushed the injured to Agra’s SN Medical College where two of the victims were declared dead, while the condition of at least four others was critical, doctors said.

All the injured are from a village near Achnera town, 30 km from here.

Police said the driver and cleaner of the LPG tanker were absconding.

Uttar Pradesh DSP seriously injured as son opens fire

Allahabad, September 24: A deputy superintendent of police (DSP) was critically injured when a bullet fired by his son during a brawl hit him in the head Wednesday night in the George Town locality of this city, police said.

The incident took place at around 11.30 p.m.

DSP S.P. Chaudhary received a bullet injury in his head and was rushed to a private hospital in critical condition.

School bus catches fire, 29 kids rescued

Mumbai, September 24: Quick thinking on part of the bus driver and residents saved the lives of 29 students of SVPM School in Thane after the mini-bus carrying them home caught fire on Tuesday.

The incident took place at Dattawadi in Kalwa around 12.30 pm.

According to police, the bus, hired by parents, was on its return trip to drop students aged between 11-13 years at Vastuanand Housing Complex and its neighbouring areas in Kharegaon.

“I saw smoke coming out from the engine of the bus and I rushed to it,’ said Uttam Mishra, a resident of the area.

Drunk dad breaks bawling infant’s legs

Mumbai, September 24: The sight of nine-month-old Vinay Dhuri, legs swathed in bandages, is heart-wrenching. But the one person who should have heard the child’s cry of pain is currently behind bars, for hurting him.

Vinay’s father, Harish Dhuri, 30, was arrested on Saturday night after his wife Harshali filed a complaint with the Powai police.

Dhuri, a resident of Tunga village in Powai, returned home drunk on Saturday after a trip to Pune. Police said he began getting annoyed because his son Vinay wouldn’t stop crying.

15 workers killed, 50 trapped in Chhattisgarh plant, probe ordered

Raipur, September 23:At least 15 workers were killed and some 50 were trapped under debris when a chimney of an under-construction power plant of Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (Balco) collapsed in Chhattisgarh’s Korba town Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The state government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident that took place when about 100 workers and engineers were engaged in the construction work at Balco Nagar area, some 250 km north of state capital Raipur.

Woman killed for not meeting dowry demands

Etah, September 23: A 24-year-old woman has been allegedly killed by her husband and his family members in Nagrla Bhakti village of the district after her parents failed to meet their dowry demands, police said. An FIR was today registered against the victim”s husband, Rupesh, and four others including her mother and father-in-law following the incident yesterday, they said.

Investigation into the case is on.

A sharpshooter of Ravana gang arrested

New Delhi, September 23: A sharpshooter of the ”Ravana” gang, allegedly involved in the killing of a traders” association president from UP, was arrested in the capital after a brief encounter, police said today. Puneet Kumar (25) was arrested yesterday from M2K PVR Cinema in Rohini with an automatic Italian pistol 7.65 bore, two live cartridges and a stolen motor cycle.

Ten killed, scores trapped as BALCO chimney collapses

Kobra, September 23: Atleast six people lost their lives when an under construction chimney at the Bharat Aluminium Co Ltd (Balco) site here collapsed. All the deceased are reported to be labourers working at the site.

The chimney of the power plant was under construction at the time. According to initial reports, seventy more people are feared trapped inside the debris.

Four of family die in road accident

Madhepura, September 23: Four members of a family were killed and two others injured when a truck collided with a private vehicle on NH-102 under Sadar police station here today.

Police said the speeding truck collided head on with the private vehicle near Chakla canal. Two people were killed on the spot while four others sustained serious injuries. The injured were admitted to the local sadar hospital where two of them succumbed to their injuries.

One injured, two houses destroyed in windstorm

Srinagar, September 23: One person was injured and two houses were damaged in a windstorm, which hit parts of Handwara in Kupwara district, a police spokesman said today. Abdul Gaffar Bhat was critically injured when the roof of his house collapsed last night due to the high speed winds at Kulangam village of Handwara, 80 kms from here, the spokesman said.

Army Major, jawan, top militant killed in Kashmir encounter

Srinagar, September 23: An Army Major, a Naik and a top militant commander carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh were killed in the on-going encounter in north Kashmir district of Bandipora.

”We have lost Major J S Suri and a Naik in the encounter,” a defence ministry spokesman told UNI this afternoon.

He said a top militant commander was also killed while another militant was still hiding there.

He said the operation was still on when the reports last came in.

Man arrested in J&K Bank dacoity case

Srinagar, September 23: A man has been arrested in connection with a bank dacoity in Kishtwar district and a small part of the Rs 1.6 crore loot was recovered from him, police said. Special Investigation Team (SIT) of police under DIG Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban range Deepak Kumar arrested one Shahid Hussain of Sirigwari village and Rs 4,89,600 was recovered from him, they said.

Three die after being hit by train in Jharkhand

Ranchi, September 23: Three people died after they were hit by a train in Palamau district of Jharkhand early Wednesday morning, police said.

According to police, the incident took place between Chiyachi and Ketaki railway stations in Palamau district, around 180 km from here, when the three were crossing the railway track.

‘It seems the villagers could not see the coming train due to poor visibility. The incident took place before sunrise. All the three were hit by the speeding train and died on the spot,’ a police official from Palamau district told IANS.

Alleged gang rape, burning of woman

Mumbai, September 23: A young woman was allegedly gang raped and set on fire on Tuesday at Antop Hill, Mumbai.

She suffered severe burns and later died of her injuries.

Deputy Commissioner of Police S.D. Bhaviskar told The Hindu that the police have arrested Rajesh Devendra, Kumar Devendra, Nitya Devendra and Shankar Mudaliyar.

The accused were brothers, he said.

Polish priest robs bank

Warsaw, September 22: A bank robber who stole about $1,000 at knife-point turns out to have been a priest, prosecutors said Tuesday.

The robbery took place Monday afternoon at Polish bank PKO in the town of zamotuly, in western Poland, the Polish Press Agency PAP reported.

The robber, whose name was withheld by Polish law, was detained shortly after the attack and identified himself as a priest, prosecutors told PAP.

Prosecutors confirmed that he was a vicar who previously worked in Bialogard, in northern Poland.

Three married women murdered in Delhi

New Delhi, September 22: Three married women were murdered in the last twenty hours in different parts of the capital.

In one case, the police arrested the woman’s husband who called in the police after committing the crime. In other two incidents also, the police suspect the involvement of the husband.

Police arrested Sandeep, a daily wager, for stabbing to death his 28-year-old wife Sunita near Nangloi railway station Tuesday afternoon. After murdering her, Sandeep himself called the police to inform about his crime and surrendered before them.
