IIT student suspected in murder to be taken to court

New Delhi, October 26: The student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi who was arrested and charged with killing a 19-year-old woman from Nagaland will be taken to court later Monday, police said.

“He has confessed his crime,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) H.G.S. Dhaliwal told IANS, referring to Pushpam Sinha, a 34-year-old PhD student at IIT Delhi.

Naxals kill villager in Gadchiroli district

Nagpur, October 26: A 36-year-old man was killed by a group of naxalites in Bengunda village in Gadchiroli district, police said on Monday.

Ganesh Katlame was attacked by nearly a dozen extremists with sharp weapons on Sunday night near Laheri in Bhamragarh taluka, suspecting him to be a police informer, they said.

Police rushed to the spot on receiving the information and further investigations are on, they added.

Couple killed in Patna, love affair likely cause

Patna, October 26: A man and a woman were killed in Patna, police said Monday, adding that a love affair between the two victims was the likely cause of the murders.

Ajit Kumar and his girlfriend Geeta Kumari, both in their 20s, were killed late Sunday night at Veer Singh Colony under Gardanibagh police station here.

Geeta was the daughter of an assistant commissioner of central excise, currently posted in Jamshedpur in Jharkhand and Ajit was the son of a government official posted here.

IIT student held for murder

New Delhi, October 26: A teenaged Naga girl was strangled and later burnt to death in South Delhi allegedly by an IIT research scholar who attempted to rape her, police said on Sunday.

The incident was reported from Munirka late on Sunday night by the sister of the victim after she came back from work, a senior police official said.

Pushpam Kumar Sinha (34), who is doing Ph. d from IIT, Delhi, has been arrested on charges of murder and rape.

The girl had come to the capital a month ago and was staying with her sister, who is working in a hotel at Connaught Place.

Ring pledge doesn’t dilute rape

Mumbai, October 26: A rape victim’s consent to intercourse in exchange for marriage with the accused is not tantamount to consensual sex, held a Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court on October 6 while upholding a conviction in a 2007 case.

The 16-year-old victim, a schoolgirl, was raped by her neighbour, Vanraj alias Sunil Masraj, 21, when she was alone at her residence at Hingana, Nagpur, in 2005. Masraj allegedly threatened to kill her if she revealed the truth to anyone. But when girl became pregnant, the two garlanded each other at a local temple and lived together in Masraj’s house.

Top income tax official, wife held in assets case

Mumbai, October 26: The CBI on Sunday arrested an income tax (I-T) commissioner from Nagpur and his wife for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets worth Rs5 crore.

Ajay Kumar Singh was arrested on Sunday morning at the Nagpur airport, on his return from Mumbai. His wife Mrinalika was picked up by the agency from their residence at Seminary Hills for abetting corruption. CBI officials had been on the trail of his assets over the last few days, after a tip-off.

Naxalite killed in encounter

Ranchi, October 25: A Naxalite was today killed and three others were arrested following an encounter with security forces near Jonha, about 35 kms from Ranchi.

Acting on a tip-off that a group of Naxalites were about to slip into Bengal’s Purulia district, a police team reached the spot and a gunbattle began between the two sides, Senior Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar told reporters here.

“Four Naxalites were hit by bullets. One body has been found,” he said, adding that others fled.

The police arrested three Naxalites, he said.

Tribals set afire power sub-station in West Bengal

Midnapore (WB), October 25: Tribals today set afire a power sub-station of the West Bengal State Electricity Board after a woman was electrocuted at Kolsonda village in troubled West Midnapore district.

Police said the woman died after she came in contact with a live wire hanging from an electric pole.

As news spread, the villagers, just six km away from the area under the command of the Joint Security Force deployed to combat the Maoists, attacked the 133 KV power sub-station, ransacked it and set it on fire.

Naxals kill four CISF jawans in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, October 25: In fresh wave of violence unleashed by Naxalites, four securitymen including a CISF sub-inspector were killed today in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district.

Over 50 Naxalities triggered a landmine blast to blow up a jeep carrying six CISF jawans who were on a regular patrol near Rajabangla village in the district, R K Vij, Inspector General of Police told PTI.

The CISF jawans were deployed at the National Mining Development Corporation in the area, he said.

Man hacks wife to death; commits suicide

Lucknow, October 25: A man committed suicide after allegedly hacking his wife to death in a fit of rage over a petty dispute in Phoolbehar area of Lakhimpur district, police said today.

“Uttam Yadav hacked his wife Kusuma Devi (24) in Randauva village last night after the duo had a heated argument over some personal matters,” Additional Superintendent of Police Ramakant Prasad said here.

However, filled with remorse, Yadav then hanged himself to death from a tree in the village outskirts, the officer claimed.

“His body was recovered this morning,” he said.

New Delhi, October 25: With the arrest of four alleged snatchers in the national capital, police today claimed that they have solved about a dozen criminal cases, including looting of identity cards and driving licences.

Gang leader Vikas alias Vicky (24), allegedly involved in many criminal cases and released from jail recently, Anand Singh, Satpal Singh and Zuber Ahmed (all 23-years-old) were arrested from Peeragarhi in west Delhi yesterday, police said.

132 killed in deadly Baghdad bombings

Baghdad, October 25: At least 132 people were killed and over 500 others injured when two trucks packed with explosives detonated in quick succession in the heart of the Iraqi capital Sunday, the interior ministry said.

“According to latest reports, up to 132 people were killed and 512 others were injured in the massive explosions in downtown Baghdad,” an official told Xinhua requesting anonymity.

Earlier, the official put the toll at 62 killed and 180 injured.

One person killed after explosion in truck

Jamnagar, October 25: One person was killed and another seriously injured when an explosion took place in a truck during the welding work, police said.

The explosion occurred as the diesel tank blew up when some welding was done on the the truck, police said adding one Vijay Madrasi died on the spot.

The injured has been taken to city civil hospital for treatment, police added.

Two brothers found dead

New Delhi, October 25: Two brothers were found dead at their residence in Bawana area of the national capital, police said today.

Police suspected that both the brothers — Dhananjay (22) and Akshay (25)– were killed by their room mate Sanjoy who was staying with them at their sector 8 residence in Bawana industrial area.

Last night, both the brothers had an argument following which their room mate Sanjay asked them to go outside the house.

When the duo went out, Sanjay locked himself inside the house and apparently threatened to throw acid on them if they kept fighting.

British tourist found dead in Goa

Panaji, October 25: A British tourist was found dead in a hotel at Colva beach in South Goa today, police said.

39-year-old William Scott, who was staying alone in the hotel room, was found dead this morning and police suspect drug overdose as the reason for his death.

Colva police said Scott had returned to the hotel, 35 kms from here, late last night.

“The hotel management called police as he was not responding to the calls. They broke open the door to find him dead,” police said.

Boys drown in river

Kalpetta, October 25: Two boys were drowned in a river near Kambalakkad near here in Wayanad district today, police said.

Shabir (13) and Mazood (14), students of Kaniyampetta Higher Secondary School, were entangled under strong under currents while taking bath in the Kallanchira river near Kumbalad dam.

The bodies were recovered by the locals, police said

55 teachers arrested, later arrested

Kapurthala, October 25: Police today arrested 55 ETT teachers including 31 women, who were staging dharna outside the residence of education minister Upinderjit Kaur here.

SSP Ram Singh said arrested teachers, who were demanding regularisation of their services were released in the evening.

More than 3,000 teachers under the banner of Democratic teachers front today held a rally at a garden here to protest against the wrong policies of education and misbehaviour with the teachers allegedly by Director General School Education by slapping unnecessary suspensions.

CBI arrests Income Tax commissioner, wife in DA case

Mumbai, October 25: CBI today arrested an Income Tax commissioner from Nagpur and his wife for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to their known source of income to the tune of Rs four crore.

While IT commissioner Ajay Kumar Singh was arrested from Mumbai airport by CBI sleuths, his wife Mrunalika Singh was arrested from their residence in Nagpur.

“CBI has booked the couple for amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs four crore since the year 2002 in the name of several family members,? CBI counsel Ejaz Khan told PTI.

One dies of swine flu in Maha, nationwide toll is 444

New Delhi, October 25: One person succumbed to swine flu today even as 49 fresh cases of the disease were reported from across the country, official sources said today.

The death was reported from Maharashtra. With this, the total number of deaths nationwide have risen to 444.

Karnataka recorded the highest number of cases today with 15 followed by Delhi (13), Maharashtra (10) and Kerala (5).

All the 49 cases reported during the day are indigenous cases.

The total number of those afflicted with the disease has reached 13,370, the sources said.

Three arrested with 3.5 kgs charas from Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, October 25: Ahmedabad police today arrested three persons with 3.5 kgs of charas from the old city area.

“Acting on a tip off, we laid a trap in the old city area where three persons were found with 3.5 kg charas worth over three crore in the international market,” a senior official in the crime branch said.

The official added the arrested are being interrogated regarding how and from where they procured the contraband and whether they delivered any consignment in the city.

Four CISF men, four Maoists killed in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, October 25: Four Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) troopers and four Maoist rebels were killed in separate incidents of violence in Chhattisgarh Sunday, police said.

An explosion killed the troopers and injured two of their colleagues when the vehicle they were travelling in ran over a landmine planted by the Maoists in Dantewada district, some 400 km from here.

Cellphone shop partner robbed of rs 26.50 lakh

Madurai, October 25: A two member motorcycle borne gang attacked and robbed a cellphone shop partner of Rs 26.50 lakh today while he was on his way to board a Chennai bound bus to purchase mobile phones, Police said.

The gang attacked him with a knife at Arapalayam and pushed him down before decamping with the cash, they said.

police said the man was a partner in a mobile phone shop at Meenakshi Bazhar where they allegedly sold cellphones with and without warranty. the man used to frequently travel to Chennai to procure mobile phones, they said.

Woman jumps to death

New Delhi, October 25: A 42-year-old woman allegedly jumped to death from the seventh floor of her apartment in East Delhi today, police said.

The victim, Usha Devi, who was staying with her husband and three children at Rajdhani apartment in Madhu Vihar, was apparently under depression due to her prolonged illness, police said.

She had been undergoing treatment for past several years.

Her husband and three children were at home at the time of the incident.

Drunk factory worker kills two colleagues

New Delhi, October 25: A minor tiff over drinks led a factory worker to throw acid on two of his colleagues, who died on their way to the hospital, police said Sunday.

The incident occurred in a tar making factory of Bawana area in west Delhi when Sanjay opened a can filled with acid and threw it on Dhananjay Kumar, 24, and his brother Akshay, 22, Saturday evening.

According to police, the three were drinking together in the evening and had a minor dispute afterwards.
