Students brainstorm on global issues in Shillong

Indian students Friday began a brainstorming session in the state capital of Meghalaya on several issues ranging from conflict, climate change to growth and employment.

The three-day session, organised by the North East India International Model United Nations (NEIMUN), is being attended by students from India’s northeastern states and from the metropolitan cities.

Delhi University to allow re-evaluation of answer sheets

Delhi University has decided to revive the practice of re-evaluation of answer sheets, which was stopped last year due to introduction of multiple examiner evaluation system.

“The re-evaluation of answer sheets, which had become infructuous because of introduction of checking of answer sheets by multiple examiners, will be reverted back and answer sheets will be examined by single examiner,” Joint Registrar (Academic) Ram Dutt said in an official notification today.

HC seeks DU response on plea questioning Ph.D, M.Phil entrance process

Delhi High Court has sought the response of Delhi University (DU) on a plea by a lawyer who has alleged that the varsity’s admission process for M.Phil and Ph.D courses is “arbitrary”.

Justice Manmohan issued the notice to DU and sought its reply by March 16, 2015, the next date of hearing in the matter.

The court was hearing the plea by advocate Jamshed Ansari, who has alleged that DU violated University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines to arbitrarily admit students into its Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) courses.

Jadavpur University students to hold referendum on VC’s resignation

Students of Jadavpur University, who are pressing for the resignation of its Vice-chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti over calling in the police to break up a gherao on September 17, have decided to go for a referendum on the issue.

“Around 8000-9000 students from all the three faculties of science, engineering and arts will take part in this referendum on October 30 and 31. We will conduct it just the way we have been conducting student elections,” Chiranjit Ghosh, general secretary of students’ union Fetsu, told PTI.

All India Survey on Higher Education 2014-15 launched

The Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry Wednesday launched the All-India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2014-15, an annual, web-based, pan-India exercise on the status of higher education in the country.

The annual survey collects data on several parameters, including student enrollment, examination results, education finance and infrastructure.

The data helps in making informed policy decisions and conducting research in education development.

Jitendra Singh announces over 50 per cent hike in research fellowship

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh on Tuesday announced an over 50 per cent hike in the fellowship amount received by various categories of young research scientists.

“The long pending demand of researchers has been addressed as the government had decided to revise their fellowships,” said Jitndra Singh.

The step has been taken in a bid to contribute more for research and development.

Provide leadership free of bureaucratization: JNU teachers to VC

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association has for the second time written a letter to the vice chancellor urging him to provide effective leadership free of bureaucratization to the institute and fulfill their earlier stated demands.

The JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) Oct 12 wrote a letter and threatened action if the vice chancellor failed to fulfil their charter of demands within 21 days.

With the demand on issues of promotion and pension, Vice Chancellor S.K. Sopory replied to the teachers’ association Oct 15.

IIMC to be upgraded to Communication University: Javadekar

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Monday that the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) would be upgraded into a ‘Communication University’.

“Steps would be taken to initiate this process and a roadmap would be prepared soon by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting,” Javadekar said during the convocation ceremony and launch of golden jubilee celebrations at Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) on Monday.

Over 140 fake examinees arrested in Bihar

More than 140 people have been arrested in Bihar for impersonation in a statewide written examination for the recruitment of police constables, officials said Monday.

“We have arrested 23 impersonators, including a woman, on Sunday from examination centres in Patna. The arrested people were hired by constable-aspirants to write their exam paper,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Jitendra Rana.

Tech students need to hone communication, soft-skills: TCS

Country’s largest software exporter TCS, which is in the process of hiring 25,000 people from the campuses and raise it to 35,000 next fiscal, feels the education institutes must pay special attention to improve communication and soft skills of their students.

“From an improvement point of view, we have been telling institutes that communications and soft skills are something that can be looked at… Which will make people a bit more ready,” executive vice-president and global head for human resources Ajoy Mukherjee told PTI.

Arbitrary admissions: Court notice to DU

The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to Delhi University on an advocate’s plea alleging arbitrary admission process in two courses.

Skill development programme held in Itanagar

A one-day long workshop on ‘Skill Development and Strategies for the Future’ was conducted recently in Itanagar by the Department of Skill Development, Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

Various vocational training providers from other states participated and briefed about the facilities of their institutions.

PIL challenges additional reservations in medical courses

Public Health Organisation, an NGO, has filed a public interest litigation in the Bombay High Court challenging Maharashtra government’s decision to provide 16 percent reservation to Marathas and 5 percent qouta to Muslims in MBBS and post-graduate medical courses.

The PIL, filed by PHO chief I S Gilada, was mentioned before a division bench which had on October 14 allowed the petitioner to carry out certain amendments and clubbed this matter with other petitions challenging the reservations for Marathas and Muslims.

Give capital punishment to those who attack northeast people: NESO

The North East Students Organisation (NESO) Friday demanded capital punishment for those involved in racial attacks against people from northeast in other parts of India.

NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said: “We have submitted a letter to Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his deputy Kiren Rijiju demanding that capital punishment should be awarded to those involved in racial attacks and murder of a woman from Mizoram.”

Need for improving education system: Rajnath

Home Minister Rajnath Singh Friday said the education system in the country needs a qualitative improvement with focus on skill development.

“Our education system needs qualitative improvement and it should focus on skill development, values and spiritual development,” he said here while addressing an international conference for school principals.

The home minister also expressed concern that not even one Indian university featured in the list of top 275 universities in the world, according to the Times Higher Education Survey.

Many students and those in early stages of their professional career in India feel that internships is an useful step towards getting their first job, according to a survey.

Professional networking site LinkedIn’s survey also found that the top attributes of a dream job for these people are happiness at work, money and career progression.

“In India, students and early professionals cited internships (53 pr cent) as a useful and an important step to increase the chances of getting a first job soon,” LinkedIn said in a statement today.

Fresh spate of protests at Jadavpur varsity a month after

A month after the alleged police attack on protestors at Jadavpur University that spurred a mass student movement, a torch rally was organized here Thursday by the students refusing to backdown from their primary demand of the vice chancellor’s resignation.

Students have been demonstrating to demand removal of Vice Chancellor Abhijit Chakravarti since Sep 17 when university authorities allegedly ordered a police crackdown to break up a peaceful sit-in for an independent investigation into the alleged molestation of a woman student inside a hostel in September.

Three students expelled for ragging in Bihar

Three students were expelled Thursday from a college in Bihar for four years on charges of ragging a fellow student.

“These students were expelled from the college as they were found involved in the ragging of a student after an inquiry,” Patna college principal N K Choudhary told mediapersons here.

Ragging is banned on campuses under directions from the Supreme Court and the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The Nalanda University will provide free education to poor students if they qualify on the parameters of the varsity, its Chancellor Prof Amartya Sen said on Wednesday.

The students of poor economic background interested in studying at the Nalanda University will be provided free education if they qualify on the parameters of excellence to be decided by the University, Sen told reporters.
