Student dies of drug overdose

Hyderabad, February 28: A first year degree student of a private college, died allegedly due to a medicine overdose on Sunday. The girl had stayed awake all night to complete her college project work and took four to five tablets for headache and died of complications, police said.

P Praneeta (18), was the daughter of Rajaiah and Venkata Lakshmi, residents of Borabanda. She was studying BCom from Indira Priyadarshini College at Nampally. Police said Praneeta was short on attendance in her college. A couple of days back, college authorities had reportedly told Praneeta she might be barred from writing examinations if she did not submit her project report.

According to police, last date for submitting the project was on Friday.

As she could not complete the project by Friday, Praneeta went to college along with her mother on Saturday and told the principal about their poor financial position.

“We told college authorities that Praneeta had to take up part-time work due to their financial condition. The principal understood our situation and asked her to come on Monday along with the completed project,” Venkata Lakshmi told police.

Praneeta also gave a written representation to college authorities to allow her to write examinations. According to Venkata Lakshmi, Praneeta had to work as a salesgirl in a super market as her father, an auto driver had fallen ill.

According to Praneeta’s mother, the girl started her project work on Saturday evening and as she developed a headache in the night, asked her sisters to bring some medicines.

“Praneeta took nearly four or five tablets and worked on the project till 5 a.m on Sunday. Before she went to sleep, she asked her mother to wake her at 8 a.m but she could not sleep after developing uneasiness,” police said.

Praneeta was shifted to a nearby clinic but doctors there asked them to take her to another private hospital at Ameerpet. However, Doctors there also did not admit her and referred her to NIMS. Praneeta was turned away from there as well as hospital authorities said no doctors were available as it was a Sunday. Praneeta was then shifted to Gandhi Hospital but she died on the way.

“It looks like the girl developed complications after consuming medicines. The body has been sent for postmortem to ascertain the cause of death,” SR Nagar police said. A case under Section 174 (suspicious death) was registered.
