Local body polls may not be held in September

Hyderabad, August 14: Municipal administration department has expressed its inability to conduct the elections to the municipalities and corporation according to the schedule, stating that Supreme Court has ordered to take up enumeration of backward classes people.

The state election commission held a meeting with the MA&UD principal secretaries TS Appa Rao and Pushpa Subrahmanyam, here on Friday.

SEC commissioner P Ramakanth Reddy wanted to know the preparedness of the MA&UD department in conducting the elections to the urban local bodies (ULBs) that were due in September this year.

However, the MA&UD officials informed the commissioner that as the Supreme Court had ordered to take up enumeration of BC population of the state and so far the state government did not take a decision, it was not possible to tell whether they could be able to conduct the elections on time or not.

They stated that the criteria to follow in determining the reservations in the ULB elections was also not clarified by the government and they have to wait for it.

However, SEC commissioner Ramakanth Reddy instructed them to complete the reservations process as early as possible.
