Yamuna poses threat; flows 2.15 m above danger mark in Delhi

New Delhi, September 23: Yamuna river acquired menacing proportions as the water level of the river in Delhi reached 206.98 metres, 2.15 metres above the danger mark, as more water was released from the Hathinikund barrage in Haryana, increasing the flood threat to the capital.

According to Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control department, at around 1200 hrs, yesterday the water level of the river had crossed the 206 metre mark and was flowing 2.15 metres above the danger mark.

”The water level of the river has increased very fast during past six hours and seeing such speed, the water level is expected to cross 207 metres soon,” an official of the Central Water Commission said.

”As precautionary measures, train services across the Old Railway Bridge have been suspended and diverted to other routes,” a railway official said.

The old iron bridge over the river Yamuna has been closed for traffic due to rising water levels of the river Yamuna.

Many low-lying areas of the capital like New Usmanpur, Yamuna Bazar, Okhla and Nigambodh Ghat were flooded and people were shifted to temporary shelter camps.
