New Delhi: CPI-M leader Prakash Karat on Sunday said that Kerala’s ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) will work to defeat Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who will be contesting from the state’s Wayanad parliamentary constituency too.
In a video message, the former Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) chief said Congress’s decision to field Gandhi from Kerala went against the party’s “stated commitment” to fight the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“In Kerala, it is the LDF, which is the main force that can fight the BJP. And Rahul Gandhi is going to Kerala to fight the LDF, which means we have to take on the United Democratic Front (UDF), of which he will be a candidate.
“The UDF consists of not only Congress but Muslim League and other parties which have a dubious reputation. And we shall work to defeat the UDF in all constituencies including Wayanad,” he added.
On Sunday morning, Congress leader A. K. Antony announced that the Congress President will contest the Lok Sabha election from Wayanad, apart from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi – the traditional seat of the Nehru-Gandhi family for many decades.
