Suspended Constable dies in policy custody in Imphal

Imphal: A suspended police Constable died in police custody here on Saturday.

The deceased, identified as 35-year-old Mohammad Manjur Ahmed, was found dead in the police custody on March 30. His body has been kept in the mortuary of JNIMS hospital.

“During his service, he used to guard Nando while he was lodged in Sajiwa jail,” said Anwar Huissen, brother of the deceased.

The constable was suspended from service on March 12 for his alleged association with Nando, an absconder belonging to the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP).

After the suspension of the constable, Nando had escaped from JNIMS hospital on March 26. Following Nando’s escape, the police constable was immediately detained by the East District police on March 28.

Nando is wanted in several cases of extortion, kidnapping, and murder. He was also the mastermind behind the kidnapping of a minor girl.

The minor was found dead in November 2003, a week after she was kidnapped from her school for ransom. Her decomposed body was found inside a gunny bag. It was later revealed that she was subjected to sexual assault.

Sources in the police said that the suspended official died during the interrogation due to over action by the police. Further investigation in the matter is underway.
