Voluntary groups, individuals continue good work

Vijayawada, october 09: Voluntary organizations and philanthropists continue to lend a helping hand to the district administration in providing food and giving relief material to the flood-affected families put up in several rehabilitation centres, even as the flood waters have receded from most parts of the city.

The organizations and individuals that have adopted a rehabilitation centre each continue to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner as they have been asked by the district authorities to do so at least till Sunday.

Members of the Rotary clubs that have adopted such centers said on Thursday that it gave them immense satisfaction to help the people in distress. Members of the Rotary clubs of Vijayawada Mid-Town and Sree Durga, who have been providing food to the inmates of the rehabilitation centre in NSM Public School with the financial help given by the Reliance group, participated in serving dinner to the affected families to feel the usefulness of their initiative.

“We will also give some grocery and other essential items that these families would need to reconstruct their lives after returning home,” said Rotary Club of Vijayawada Mid-Town president T. Trinadha Raju.

The day also saw B.S. Rao, chairman of Sri Chaitanya Educational Institutions, contributing Rs.10 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund in the form of a cheque, which was handed over to VGTM-UDA Vice-Chairman Y.S.B.S. Vithal.

The VIP Walkers Association and Ramakanth Stores gave blankets, towels, sarees, pants, shirts, toiletry and fruits worth Rs.2 lakh to 1,500 inmates of the rehabilitation centre at IGMC Stadium. ACP (Central) A. Subba Rao handed over the material at a function attended by programme convenor Jupudi Basaveswara Rao.

The teaching staff of Potti Sriramulu Chalavadi Mallikharjuna Rao Engineering College announced one day salary amounting to Rs.29,263 for relief work to the flood victims.

Sarees, blankets and other material was handed over at a couple of centres in the city by the members of the Indian Medical Association, as part of the Rs.5-lakh worth material meant for distribution in the State. IMA national-elect G. Samaram handed over some material to the families and the remaining to the Municipal Commissioner for distribution.

Contributions continued to pour in directly to the VMC as well. VMC Contractors Association (Rs.50,000), Srinagar Colony Residents Welfare Association (Rs.10,116), Mutyalampadu Residents Welfare Association (Rs.10,116), corporator Pilli Lakshmi Tulasi (Rs.4,000) and Bhavani Associates (Rs.2,000) were among those who contributed to the VMC. Commissioner P.S. Pradyumna said contributions could be given in the form of a cheque or DD drawn in the name of Commissioner, VMC.
