President Patil arrives in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, October 09: President Pratibha Patil arrived in Jammu and Kashmir Friday on a day-long visit to areas along the line of control (LoC) with Pakistan in Rajouri and Poonch districts.

Governor N.N. Vohra, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, General-Officer-Commanding-in Chief of the army’s northern command Lt. Gen. B.S. Jaswal and other senior civil and military officials received the president on her arrival at Jammu airport.

Tight security arrangements are in place throughout Jammu city and nearly 5,000 additional police and paramilitary troops have been deployed in Rajouri and Poonch, where the president is scheduled to interact with army soldiers.

Patil, who is the supreme commander of the armed forces, is scheduled to have lunch with the soldiers and officers at the LoC.

Patil will also meet Rukhsana, a Rajouri girl, who along with her brother killed a militant and forced two others to flee when they entered her house Sep 27.

‘The president would be briefed on the security situation along the LoC where Pakistan-backed infiltrators have made attempts to enter the state during the recent months,’ a senior police official said here.

This is Patil’s second visit to the state. She visited the state in May last year.
