Wellington, October 24: Former captain Martin Crowe believes that New Zealand can deal without Andy Moles and asserted that skipper Daniel Vettori has the ability to run the affairs of the team without the support of a coach.
Moles today resigned as the coach of the national cricket team.
New Zealand reached the final of the recently concluded Champions Trophy in South Africa but domestic media has reported that some senior players wanted Moles removed.
No head coach would be named for the upcoming ODI and Twenty20 series against Pakistan to be played in Abu Dhabi and Dubai next month.
”When your captain is not strong or is young you need a coach. But Daniel Vettori is exceptional, just like Stephen Fleming was before him,” said Crowe.
”Dan and his team need to be given room to be accountable to themselves and they don’t need coaches that just get in the way.
”This is Dan’s team. He needs to be given room to run things. No coach, no vice-captain,” he added.
The former right-hand batsman also feels that Vettori needs a strong manager and someone with technical expertise to which a player can turn to seek some technical guidance.
However, Crowe further stressed that the 30-year-old left-armer would be able to cope up with an increased workload.
”He’s stated he only sees himself captaining for three or four years. He’s a resilient guy. He doesn’t need anyone except for a very good manager,” Crowe told The Dominion Post.
”The New Zealand team would be a potentially very good one if they were all out there working it out for themselves.
”They should all have one-on-one coaches who they work with back in New Zealand and they can call on in times of need. If the team is overseas it can be done over the phone and online,” he added.
