Uttarakhand bypolls: A prestige issue for BJP

Dehradun, August 30: Stakes are high for the BJP in the September 10 byelections to Vikas Nagar assembly seat as it can get majority of its own in the 70-member Uttarakhand assembly if it wins the elections.

The BJP, which has 35 seats, and has support of three Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) leaders would get majority of its own if it wins the seat.

According to BJP sources, Vikas Nagar seat has become a prestige issue for the party which has fielded senior leader Kuldeep Kumar from the constituency.

The seat fell vacant after BJP MLA Munna Singh Chouhan resigned over some differences with the party.

Chouhan is contesting the polls as an Independent where as Congress has fielded Nav Prabhat.
