Hyderabad: Expressing serious concern over a series of unpleasant incidents in Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over those incidents.
Addressing the media at Gandhi Bhavan on Friday, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Prime Minister remained a mute spectator to the incidents of organised violence by the BJP, VHP and Sangh Parivar activists in JNU during the past one week. Uttam said the Congress strongly condemns chanting of anti-national slogans during the protest. He blamed the BJP and RSS for those incidents and accused them of interfering in the university’s affairs. He said the Congress had a clear stand on Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. “He was an anti-national and has been punished,” he said while accusing the BJP of adopting dual stands on Afzal Guru. He pointed out that BJP has formed the government in Jammu & Kashmir in alliance with People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which hailed Afzal Guru as a hero.
The TPCC chief alleged that the BJP-led NDA Government has turned the universities across the country into trouble zones. Just to promote BJP-RSS ideology, the Central Government is backing all illegal activities of ABVP in the institutions which were earlier considered Centres of Excellence. He clarified that AICC Vice-President Rahul Gandhi did not play any politics when he intervened on the issue of suicide by Dalit research scholar Rohit Vemula in Hyderabad Central University. Similarly, Rahul Gandhi took a clear stand on JNU issue. However, the BJP and Sangh Parivar are targeting Rahul Gandhi and Nehru-Gandhi family only for political gains.
Uttam Kumar Reddy also condemned booking of sedition case against student leader Kanhaiya Kumar and described it as “unwarranted”. He said that the pro-BJP advocates directly challenged democracy and judiciary by attacking the accused and journalist in the premises of Patiala House Court. He said one BJP MLA himself was involved in the attack. They also targeted a panel of senior advocates constituted by the Supreme Court. “When the entire country is watching these incidents, Narendra Modi is completely silent about them. He must at least clarify whether he is the Prime Minister of India or just BJP,” he said while demanding that the BJP Government stop interfering with the affairs of universities and withdraw all false cases registered against the students.
