US stocks gain despite disappointing jobs data

New York, January 09: Wall Street stocks made modest gains as the market was able to shake off a weak start due to disappointing government data on the troubled labour market.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 11.33 points (0.11 per cent) to close at 10,618.19, getting a boost in a late-session snapback.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite advanced 17.12 points (0.74 per cent) to 2,317.17 and the broad-market Standard & Poor’s 500 index added 3.29 points (0.29 per cent) to 1,144.98.

After opening lower, the major Wall Street indices trended higher throughout the session, with the Dow only reaching positive territory in the final half hour of trade.

The blue-chip index closed at its highest level since early October 2008.

The Labor Department reported the US economy lost 85,000 jobs in December while unemployment rate held at 10 per cent.
