Urdu will stay alive only through ghazals: Sani

New Delhi, August 23: Tina Sani, veteran ghazal singer from Pakistan, believes that Urdu as a language is losing its use among people and will only remain alive through ghazals.

“I believed in Urdu as a language and took up ghazal as a career. The language is being put to limited use, and will remain alive only through ghazals,” Sani told PTI.

The 52-year-old singer thinks that though ghazals are becoming less popular among the young generation, they should be made to listen to this genre of classical music to make them understand the importance of it.

“I am invited to sing a number of times in universities in Pakistan, and try to explain the “shers” to them. It is a misnomer that ghazals are difficult to understand. Unless the young people are made to listen, how will they learn to appreciate?,” she said.
