ULFA chairman Rajkhowa remanded in 12 days custody

Guwahati, December 06: United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, the outfit’s deputy commanderin-chief Raju Baruah and Rajkhowa’s security guard Raja Bora were on Saturday produced before an Assam court and remanded in 12 days judicial custody.

Rajkhowa, Baruah and Bora were produced before the Chief Magistrate’s Court.

While being taken to court, Rajkhowa refuted the government’s claim that he had surrendered. “We have not surrendered and there can be no talks with handcuffs on. We have to be free. We want peace, but not in this way,” he told reporters.

On Friday, the ULFA chairman led a dramatic ‘surrender’ before Indian authorities at Dawki in Meghalaya. Earlier on Saturday, self-styled commander in chief, Paresh Barua had denied there was a split in the party. “We are ready for it (talks) provided sovereignty for Assam is discussed,” Barua, was quoted as saying in an email to North East Television.

“There is no split,” he said adding, “we have full confidence in Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa.”
