New Delhi, December 17: Before independence the life of a common Indian girl used to be like this: She was not sent to the school, she was married at a very early age, she was dependent on her husband, she had to give birth to too many kids, and she had to bear with her in-laws.
Nowadays the life of a common Indian girl is like this: She has almost equal opportunity to study as boys, but there is also equal pressure to perform well in exams. Some girls have even committed suicide failing to cope up this pressure. She is not married at an early age, but she is also denied the basic need of sex. She matures at an age of 12 but is not married till 26-27, she has to act like nun unwillingly. She can’t even dare to fall in love as the society has not matured enough for that.
She is not dependent on her husband, but now she has to depend on her boss. Some girls are lucky who can change their jobs due to their skills, but not all girls can afford to change jobs and they are forced to accept humiliation. She doesn’t have to produce too many kids, but she is not even in the position to care for her few kids. She has very little time left after the office hours. Kids seem like problem as pregnancy may ruin their career.
She doesn’t have to live in a joint family and bear with her in-laws, but the care and love to the kids that in-laws provide is also missing. A care-taker can never take their place. Very tiny misunderstandings can lead to divorce and there is no one to guide. Poor modern girls, my sympathies for them…
