Tension continues in Sopore, security forces burst teargas shells

Baramulla, January 19: Security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse ”pro-freedom” demonstrators in the town, protesting against the death of a youth, who was injured in police firing in June last year.

The trouble started when news spread that Manzoor Ahmad, who was injured in police firing on ”pro-freedom” demonstrators near police station Baramulla on June 29, died this morning.

Manzoor was disabled and remained confined to bed after a bullet hit and injured his spinal cord.

People took to the streets, raising ”pro-freedom” slogans, after hearing about the death of Manzoor, a resident of Drangabal.

However, when the demonstrators were moving towards the main highway, security forces stopped and directed them to disperse.

Security forces resorted to lathicharge when the demonstrators pelted stones.

Later, teargas shells were bursted to disperse the demonstrators who continued pelting stones on security forces and passing vehicles.

Shops and other business establishments in the town and its adjoining areas remained closed and traffic also went off the road.

Work in government offices, banks and other commercial establishments was also affected due to strike.
