Teacher on protest attempts suicide; to be sent to jail

Dehra Dun, January 24: Puran Singh Rana, who attempted self-immolation here seeking a permanent government job, would shortly be arrested even as the Uttarakhand government today announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh to the police officer who received burn injuries while trying to save the former.

Rana, who had climbed atop a Doordarshan tower here to register protest against government for not making the ad hoc jobs of teachers permanent, sprinkled petrol on his body yesterday and set himself afire moments after police launched operation to bring him down from the tower where he stayed for nearly four days.

In the process of dousing the fire, Dehra Dun Circle Officer Pramendra Singh received serious burn injuries.

Chief Minister R P Nishank announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for Singh and Rs 3 lakh to other policemen who were involved in the operation.
