Station Ghanpur was originally called Ganapavaram, christened after Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva. Later, it has come to be known as Ganapuram, Ghanapur, and now Ghanpur, which has taken the form of Station Ghanpur when Nizam State Railways laid a railway from Secunderabad to Kazipet via Ghanpur.
Station Ghanpur remained one of the several constituencies without much prominence until Kadiyam Srihari was elected from this constituency. He has developed the constituency to the best of his ability. His induction into the State Cabinet by NT Rama Rao soon after his (Srihari’s) maiden election brought the constituency into focus and it stayed on as long as he was in the Chandrababu Naidu Cabinet.
The by -election here is turning out to be a litmus test for the Telangana Rashtra Samithi as the party nominee T Rajaiah is facing stiff challenge from the Telugu Desam Party candidate Kadiyam Srihari.Preliminary surveys revealed that the former minister and TDP senior leader Kadiyam Srihari is forging ahead despite the Telangana sentiment that is working in favour of the TRS nominee Rajaiah .
Station Ghanpur remained a stronghold of TDP till 1999 elections, but in 2004 the TRS took the seat when G Vijaya Rama Rao wrested it from Kadiyam Srihari.However, the TDP regained the seat in the 2008 byelections when Srihari inflicted a crushing defeat on Vijaya Rama Rao.In 2009, the TRS-TDP combine took a drubbing with Congress nominee T Rajaiah trouncing the opposition.
Rajaiah recently resigned the Assembly seat to seek a re-election on behalf of the TRS. Leaders of Telangana Joint Action Committee and the TRS claim major support base in the villages.
The TRS is enjoying a slight edge in Ghanpur Station and Dharmasagar mandals, according to initial reports. The Congress is also not lagging here and its nominee Rajarapu Pratap is vigorously campaigning.However, the real fight is between the TRS and TDP.
