Suicide rate increases in Andhra

Hyderabad, April 05: Every day, 42 people commit suicide in the state. This shocking statistic appears in the latest report of the State Crime Records Bureau. In the year 2010, more than 15,529 persons ended their lives in AP. An alarming figure, which was 1,702 higher than that in the previous year.

Telangana districts Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Ranga Reddy and Mahbubnagar reported the highest number of suicides.

Till February 2011, at least 2,635 suicides had taken place in the state. The SCRB officials reported that the number of men who ended their lives was double that of women.

Around 4,827 women committed suicide in a year, as against 10,672 men. Suicides of farmers, weavers, Gulf returnees, Telangana agitators, accounted for a large number, besides the “regulars”, like domestic disputes, financial troubles and love affairs, said to be the key reasons for suicides.

Every hour, at least two persons kill themselves in the state. The figures are as follows: In Adilabad 1,486, Warangal 1,426, Karimnagar 1,343, Cyberabad 933, and in Mahbubnagar 641 ended their lives. The lowest suicide rate has been reported in North Coastal Andhra, in Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and Vishakapatnam. Rayalaseema district Kurnool topped with 822, followed by Anantapur — 764.
