Hyderabad, February 22: The police had locked down the OU campus and prevented the planned “Chalo Assembly” march, but some students managed to leave the campus. They were joined by students from outside the campus, and those who came from the districts, mainly Adilabad. On the campus, students clashed with police, throwing stones at them. Police also fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.
Tension prevailed at the Nizam College hostel at Basheerbagh, less than one km from the Assembly, after police took into custody some students. “We were protesting in front of the hostel,” said Mr Ramesh, a student. “Cops provoked students, and they began hurling stones. The cops then fired tear gas shells some of which fell inside the hostel.”
Mr Sahbarwal, the Task Force DCP, Mr V.B. Kamalsan Reddy, and the Nizam College principal held discussions with the students and brought the situation under control. A large number of students reached the Necklace Road station at 12.30 pm and hurled stones collected from the rail tracks.
“The students were raising ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans and when they saw us they rained stones at us and disappeared,” said the Lake police inspector, Mr Srinivasa Rao. Railway police said the ticket booking office and CCTV were damaged. Students set fire to a railway coach at Jamai Osmania station. The seats on the coach caught fire but cops extinguished the flames.
