Strike cripples life in south Kashmir Kulgam on Hurriyat call

Srinagar, November 06: Life was crippled in south Kashmir district of Kulgam today due to a strike called by breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) in protest against the alleged illegal occupation of lakhs of kanals of land by security forces in the state.

Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was also off the road.

Work in government offices, banks and public sector undertaking was affected due to the strike. Educational institutions wore a deserted look as students and teaching staff stayed away in response the call.

Reports reaching here said a large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed in the town since last evening.

Police has set up nakas where vehicles entering the town were being searched and those travelling in them frisked and their identity cards checked.

Majority of the people remained indoors.

Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has given a call for a day’s strike in the town.

Shopian and Baramulla towns had observed a shutdown during the last two Fridays on Mr Geelani’s call to protest against the land occupation by the security forces.

The Hurriyat had decided to give separate strike calls in each of the districts against the land occupation before calling for a Kashmir bandh.
