Police on Saturday cracked the case of the missing infant, who was taken away from an incubator in the Government Hospital here on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, the local police zeroed-in on a house in Avanigadda and recovered the infant. A childless couple allegedly stole the baby from the incubator in the ICU of the hospital. However, neighbours, who heard the cries of an infant from the house, grew suspicious and informed the police.
The Avanigadda police rushed to the house late on Friday night and arrested the couple Nagamalleshwari and Raju. They also alerted the Vijayawada Commissionerate and sent photographs of the infant and the couple. Based on positive identification by the infant’s parents – Kalyani and Subramanyam, the Vijayawada police arranged for its transfer to the government hospital.
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Gautam Sawang said they are yet to ascertain the reasons for the kidnap and the possible role of the hospital staff. He thanked the people in Avanigadda for alerting the police and appreciated the local police for taking prompt action.
