Hyderabad, October 07: With a majority of government employees, including those working in district treasury offices in the Telangana region, barring Hyderabad, participating in the general strike, salaries could not be disbursed to about 80 per cent of employees in the region.
As a result, bills and salaries for the employees even for the 12-day period before the commencement of the general strike from September 13, could not be disbursed, said official sources. The situation was particularly bad in Adilabad district. The situation is bound to dampen the spirit of Dasara celebrations, a major festival in the region.
However, with the police and judiciary staff staying away from the strike and reporting for the duty in the Telangana districts facing difficult times, the district treasury units worked amidst hostile environment to release their salary bills on October 1. While the salary bill for the government employees in the State is around Rs.2,000 crore a month, the disbursements could be completed for most of the employees in the Andhra region.
Of the three lakh government employees in the Telangana region, including Hyderabad, salaries were paid to about 85,000 employees. Of this 35,000 employees are from the city and the remaining in the districts with the bulk of them working in police, judiciary and the rest in other departments. Sources said that the pensions to retired employees could not be released as the treasuries were yet to send the intimation to the banks.
