Sharjah tower gutted by fire; 125 families homeless

Sharjah: 125 families left homeless after a spectacular wall of flames ravaged a 25-storey residential high-rise on Wednesday morning.

According to the sources, fire broke out at Al Baker 4 in Al Taawun about 2am when most of the occupants were asleep.

The blaze started on the first floor and moved up the tower. More than 50 flats in the 25-storey building, which is home to at least 500 people, were gutted by the blaze.

Civil Defence teams from Sharjah, Dubai, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain responded to a 2.15 am where huge flames painted the night sky over Al Taawun area until around 5.15am

No one was badly hurt, however the incident could have been far worse, said Mohd Nouman Damudi, who was also residing in the same tower.
