Mumbai, July 22: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex, after rising nearly two per cent, fell by 1.03 per cent to dip below 15,000 at midsession today on heavy selling by funds amid a weak opening at European markets.
The Sensex, which had started with a hefty gain of 120 points, fell sharply to record a loss of 172.47 points at 14,889.02 at 1330 hrs.
Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty lost 59.15 points at 4,409.95. It touched the day’s high of 4,557.95.
Selling pressure gathered momentum as market participants indulged in booking profit at existing higher levels.
A weak opening in European stock markets, as London’s FTSE index fell by 0.30 per cent, further fuelled the weak trend. The Hong Kong stock index fell by 0.89 per cent.
