Jammu, February 10: A journalist of a Hindi daily has been arrested here for allegedly posing as a top IT official and extorting money from a businessman, police said today.
Police said the journalist was allegedly calling a businessman on his cell phone for the last 4-5 days. Posing as chief commissioner of Income Tax Amritsar region, he was demanding Rs 10 lakh from the businessman for helping him in evasion of tax.
He had allegedly threatened to raid his business premises saying that his name had figured among the tax evaders, they said.
The businessman, a cracker wholesaler, approached the IT authorities where he was told that no calls were made to him and that he was not under their scanner, they said.
The businessman then approached Gandhi Nagar police station.
