Rare cardiac surgery performed at CARE hospital

Hyderabad, June 12: For the first time in the country, a rare cardiac surgery was performed at CARE hospital here today.

Cardiac surgeons Dr G Usha Rani, and Dr Alle Shiva Kumar performed combined cardiac surgical procedure for a young lady admitted with valvular heart problem and abnormal heart rhythm, a release from CARE hospital here said.

The operation was preformed through a 5 cms incision underneath the right breast Mitral Valve Replacement and left atrial maze procedure were performed with specially designed instruments for minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

Single lung ventilation which enables the operaion to be performed easily was provided by Dr K Brahmaji Rao, Anesthestist.

Perfusion through femorofemoral bypass was provided by Mr K S Sekhar, DPT and team. Dr Siva Kumar had worked with Dr Olivier Jegadin University of Lyon, France, who is a pioneer in minimally invasive cardiac sugery.

This type of combined cardiac surgical procedure was done through such a small incision for the for the first time in the country.

Apart from using instruments facilitating minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures, the surgeons team had used an indigenious long cryo probe to create incisions in the interior regions of the heart which are not easily accessible. Patient was walking freely on 1st post operative day and was discharged on 5th operative day with normal sinus rhythm.

Restoration of heart rhythm along with valve replacement is very important as it improves the quality of patient life post operatively.

Dr C Narsimhan, Chief of Cardiac Electrophysiology, acknowledged that development of this type innovative operative techniques and instruments, would enable them to approach different areas of the heart though small incision over the chest to correct heart rhythm problems, the release said.
