New Delhi: The Parliament today witnessed protest after the angry opposition in both houses uproared over the recent drafted citizen’s list in Assam that left 40 Lakh people’s Indian status uncertain.

Only 2.89 crores applicants names were included in the completed draft released on Monday leaving remaining 40 lakh and more applicants from including in the list, DC reported.

The house was adjourned till noon over protests led by the opposition parties just minutes after the proceeding started in the Rajya Sabha.

Lok Sabha witnessed similar protests.

Meanwhile the Congress and Trinamool Congress have scheduled to discuss the NRC in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

‘Rajiv Gandhi signed Assam accord in 1985, which was similar to NRC. They did not have the courage to implement it, we did,’ said BJP chief Amit Shah in Rajya Sabha.

The opposition party Congress’s lawmakers had protested against Amit Shah’s statement in upper house following which the speaker had to adjourn the proceedings of the House for the day.

Earlier, addressing the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “Genuine Indians should not be sent out of the country. NRC should not be politicised and used as vote bank. It is a human rights issue, not a Hindu-Muslim issue.”

The opposition parties carried placards that read: “Why are Indian citizens left out of NRC.”

The updation process of NRC is done for the first time ever since 1951 and has caused havoc among Indian residents in Assam who have entered from Bangladesh.

The Ministry of Home Affairs as well as the BJP-led Assam government had to immediately assure that no arrests or deportations would be made until all the claims were verified.
