Protesting CPI(M) workers held in TN

Chennai, February 02: Tamil Nadu CPI(M) unit secretary and other party workers were arrested today while trying to stage a protest outside the Raj Bhavan demanding immediate action to stop alleged attacks by Sri Lankan navy on Indian fishermen and withdraw a controversial Fisheries Bill.

Hundreds of CPI(M) workers were arrested while they were proceeding towards the Raj Bhavan, police said, adding that the arrested included state CPI(M) unit secretary N Varadarajan and MP T K Rangarajan.

Earlier, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala’s secretary Hansraj Verma had discussions with Varadarajan and other CPI-M leaders, who told him that they had submitted a memorandum last week to the governor urging him to impress upon the Centre to prevail upon Colombo to “rein in its navy”.

Verma told the CPI(M) leaders that the memorandum had been sent to the prime minister, a party release said.
