London, October 27: Indian-origin Nobel laureate Venkataraman Ramakrishnan was cynosure of all eyes at an impressive reception hosted in the honour of President Pratibha Patil where he was specially congratulated by her for his outstanding achievement.
“We are delighted at the news of the Nobel Prize for chemistry this year going to Dr Venkatraman Ramakrishnan. He is here today, and we all congratulate him,” Patil, who is on a four-day state visit to the UK, said amid loud applause from the 450-plus community leaders at the London Marriott Hotel.
Ramakrishnan, who received his initial education in Gujarat, said that he felt humbled at the mention by the President. He said the coveted award was a much bigger deal in India whereas for his laboratory it was the 15th time that its scientist had won the Nobel.
