Hyderabad, August 19: President Prathibha Patil on Thursday inaugurated the Fourth International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre on Thursday.
The ICM is being held for the first time in the country. It aims to bring together the largest congregation of mathematicians from across the globe.
The ICM takes place every fourth year in different locations.
It is the largest and most prestigious international meeting of mathematicians.
Mathematicians from every continent gather to take stock of the state of their subject and determine possible future directions.
The conference would be held from August 19 to 27. The International Mathematical Union is organising the Congress in collaboration with the University of Hyderabad. Over 3000 delegates from all over the world are taking part in the conference.
