Hyderabad, June 05: The collapse of five power transmission towers and partial damage to three towers has affected power supply in several parts of city, parts of Nalgonda and Khammam districts.
The APTransco officials are unable to say when they would be able to restore power supply and are busy trying to purchase power from outside the state to make good for the loss of 400 mw power supply from Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS). The shortage in supply to Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district and the city is of the order of 150 mw.
The towers had collapsed following heavy gales that led to tripping of 220 kv KothagudemBudidampadu line this afternoon. According to officials, arrangements have already been made for alternative supply of power to the affected areas but there might be unscheduled power shutdowns in several parts of Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Nalgonda and Khammam districts.
“The towers were 10 years old and they were designed to withdstand winds speed common in those days. But today, the gales were fierce apart from high temperature of over 50 degrees C. This has led to collapse of the towers,” AP Transco managing director Ajay Jain told ENS.
The problem of interruptions in power supply will be a regular feature for the next 15 days though alterative power supply arrangements are being made.
The officials said spare towers two from Hyderabad and one from Visakhapatnam had been rushed to the locations where the towers had collapsed and order has been placed for fabrication of two more towers adn they are expected to be ready by June 6, officials said.
The agency entrusted with the fabrication will undertake repair to the partially damaged towers within the next 10 days.
