Political parties observe Hyderabad Merger Day

Hyderabad, September 18: Ruling Congress, main opposition Telugu Desam, PRP, TRS and the Left parties celebrated the merger of the erstwhile Nizam state with the Indian Union at their respective party offices here today. While, BJP celebrated the day as ‘Telangana Liberation Day’, which signified that it was the day Telangana was liberated from Nizam rule.

Chief minister K Rosaiah, state Congress president D Srinivas, Congress MPs and other party leaders offered homage to the country’s first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and other national leaders at Gandhi Bhavan on the occasion.

Srinivas speaking on the occasion said that there was a need to tell the people about the history of ‘Hyderabad Merger Day’ and its importance. Referring to the rise of regional feelings among the people after formation of Andhra Pradesh state, he stressed the need to resolve such issues through nonviolence. “People of all the regions should respect one another,”he added.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N Chandrababu Naidu said that the ‘historical problems’ faced by eight districts in the erstwhile Hyderabad state, which subsequently merged with Andhra Pradesh should be addressed on priority basis.

Addressing party workers after hoisting the national flag at NTR Bhavan here on the occasion of Hyderabad Merger Day, he said that everyone should remember the sacrifices made by several leaders for the merger of Hyderabad state.

“Development of the region came to a standstill under the Congress rule due to rampant corruption. It was only under the TDP regime that the region progressed on all fronts,” the TDP chief said. TDP leaders T Devender Goud, M Narasimhulu, A Revanth Reddy, N Janardhan Reddy, A Uma Madhava Reddy and others were present.

At Telangana Bhavan, TRS celebrated Telangana Merger Day in a grand manner.

TRS politburo member Nayani Narsimha Reddy hoisted the national flag. Several party leaders also took part in the programme.

Addressing the gathering the TRS leader strongly criticised state government’s attitude on the ongoing advocates’ agitation. He alleged that this government is worst than the Nizam government.

The CPI and CPM parties jointly organised Telangana Armed Struggle Movement Day at Sundaraih Vignana Kendaram (SVK) here.

Leaders of both the Left parties attacked the BJP leaders. The leaders alleged that BJP and the Sanghaparivar were distorting the historical facts about the Telangana armedstruggle who were no way connected with the movement.

CPI deputy general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, CPM state secretary BV Ragahvulu, CPI state secretary K Narayana and others were present.

The BJP celebrated the day as ‘Telangana Liberation Day’. At several places mild tension prevailed and heated arguments took place between the police and BJP and ABVP activists. BJP leader K Laxman hoisted the national flag at Sardar Patel statue in front of the Assembly.

Later the activists were prevented from going towards the Assembly by the police. BJP state president G Kishan Reddy, B Dattatreya and several other leaders were among those arrested by the police.
