Boulders roll down Durga ghat road again

Vijayawada, September 18: Several boulders rolled down the ghat road of Sri Kanakadurga temple on Indrakeeladri hills here this morning causing panic among the temple staff and devotees. However, no one was injured in the incident.

This is the third such incident this month. Though an iron mesh has been arranged to block the sliding of boulders, it is unable to prevent the landslides and is effective only in minimising the impact. The frequent landslides are causing concern among the temple officials who are finalising arrangements for Dasara, which is fast approaching.

Temple executive engineer C Murali Balakrishna told Express that they would clear the debris within a day. He appealed to devotees to take precautions while climbing the ghat road as loose boulders were being dislodged by heavy rains.

The engineer said it was the responsibility of the company which arranged the mesh to take necessary steps to prevent rolling down of boulders. Temple officials stopped private vehicular traffic on the ghat road and are allowing only the temple buses. The officials claimed that there was no threat to the safety.
