Lucknow, April 20: Launching a crackdown against expelled BSP MLA Mukhtar Ansari and other criminals, Uttar Pradesh police carried out raids in various districts of the state, home department sources said here today.
“Raids were carried out in different places in Varanasi, Ghazipur, Mau and Azamgarh yesterday against those who are associated with either Mukhtar Ansari or Brijesh Singh and some arrests were made,” they said.
Sources said that during raids firearms and a bulletproof vehicle were also recovered from the possession of a close associate of a criminal in Varanasi.
Mukhtar, who is currently lodged in jail, and his brother Afzal was expelled from the BSP by the party supremo and UP Chief Minister Mayawati last week for their involvement in criminal activities.
Later, the CM directed the party coordinators to prepare a list of criminals in a bid to cleanse the BSP from such elements.
