Police chief, bodyguard killed in northern Afghanistan

Kunduz, Afghanistan, August 12: Taliban militants attacked a district centre in northern Afghanistan, killing a police chief and his bodyguard, government officials and a rebel spokesman said Wednesday.

Noor Khan, police chief of Dasht Archi district in the northern province of Kunduz, and brother of Mohammad Omar, the provincial governor, was killed in a Taliban attack on Tuesday night, Shaikh Sahdi, the administrative chief of Dasht Archi, said.

Earlier Sahdi had said three bodyguards were killed in the attack, but a statement issued by the presidential palace said only one bodyguard was killed in the attack.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai honoured the “patriotic sacrifice” of Khan in the statement, saying that he lost his life while protecting the lives and property of his people.

“The Taliban militants escaped from the area before reinforcements were deployed,” Sahdi told the Agency.
