PM-Sonia meet ahead of Cabinet reshuffle

New Delhi, July 09: With a Cabinet reshuffle on the cards on Monday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met Congress president Sonia Gandhi at his 7, Race Course Road residence in New Delhi today.

The much-anticipated Cabinet reshuffle is likely to take place on Monday. (Watch: New faces in the Cabinet soon?)

Ahead of the Cabinet rejig, Veerappa Moily has said that he is confident he will continue as the Law Minister.

While a reshuffle was on the cards well before the next session of Parliament from August 1, a series of developments over the last one week made it imperative for the Prime Minister and the Congress leadership to move faster, the latest being the resignation of Dayanidhi Maran in the wake of the CBI’s latest revelations in the 2G scam.

The revamp is expected to be more of a corrective measure for the government that has been under siege over charges of corruption. (Watch: Will a new look Cabinet help the UPA’s image problem?)

In addition to dropping under-performing ministers, the PM also has to announce the new Railways Minister. Mamata Banerjee resigned from that post after she was elected West Bengal Chief Minister. She is expecting the Prime Minister to keep the Railways portfolio for her party, the Trinamool Congress.

At a meeting with editors a few weeks ago, Dr Singh had refused to share details of the reshuffle, describing it only as “a work in progress”.
