Peepli Live Makes it to the Sundance Film Festival

MUmbai, December 11: Aamir Khan can definitely take some credit for this. The actor has an eye and a nose for a good script and is willing to go with his intuition.

That’s what happened with first time director Anusha Rizvi. She is believed to have emailed the Khan a synopsis of her story and he is believed to have liked it and asked her to write the full script. Well, the rest is history, as they say.

Aamir went ahead and produced Anusha’s first film as a director, ‘Peepli Live’, and the movie is currently in the post production stage. But the real good news is that the film will make its debut screening at theSundance Film Festival, in Salt Lake City, US.

This is a festival which was started by Robert Redford to support independent filmmakers and it is quite a prestigious honour for ‘Peepli Live’ to be debuting there. In fact, it is perhaps the first Indian film to make it to the competition. The film has been extensively shot in Barwai, a village some 60km from Bhopal.

Most of the actors in the movie have been taken from the late Habib Tanvir’s Naya Theatre and other village actors. Among the established actors, the film is believed to star Raghuvir Yadav and Aamir Basheer. As for Anusha, a former journalist with NDTV, it has been quite a dream run.
