OU students call off fast

Hyderabad, December 31: All the fasting students of Osmania University, who were shifted to the Gandhi General Hospital a couple of days ago, today withdrew their fast after the Centre invited all the political parties for a discussion on separate Telangana issue.

Seventeen OU students, who sat on an indefinite fast soon after Centre’s second statement on Telangana, were forcibly shifted to hospital a couple of days back.

Though the hospital authorities claimed that the students were being put on drip, OU Joint Action Committee (JAC) leaders maintained that five students did not took treatment and were on a fast since yesterday. Today morning, drama ensued when the five students locked themselves in a room as doctors tried to foil their fast and inject saline to them. As the condition of the fasting students worsened, TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao, former home minister K Jana Reddy and Prof K Jayashankar today went to the hospital and prevailed upon four of them, Narender, M Satyam, Jagan and Praveen Reddy, to withdraw their fast.

Kavi Raju, however, refused to budge and reportedly told that he would not trust politicians and continued with his fast.

Kavi Raju, an ABVP leader, was later shifted to Yashoda hospital at Secunderabad as his condition deteriorated. After the Centre issued a fresh statement in the evening inviting all the parties in the State for talks on Telangana issue, BJP State president B Dattatreya, Osmania University Vice-Chancellor T Tirupathi Rao and Balladeer Gadar went to the hospital and prevailed upon Kavi Raju to end his fast.
