Aligarh: No sedition evidence has been found so far against AMU students said UP Police a day after it has filed a sedition case against 14 students of Aligarh Muslim University.
If the accusations against the students made by BJP youth wing leader cannot be justified, sedition charges will be dropped it added, NDTV reports.
BJP activist and leader Mukesh Kumar Lodhi has filed a complaint against the 14 AMU students followed by Police filing a sedition case on Tuesday has triggered a political row with the opposition leaders accusing the state’s BJP government of bias.
Mr Lodhi had alleged that he was attacked outside the university on Tuesday and that the students beat him up after seeing BJP stickers on his vehicle.
The students also shouted anti-India, pro-Pakistan slogans, besides beating him and his associates his complaint read, however, his video evidence shows no such claims.
“If there is no evidence, sedition charges would be dropped,” an officer told the media.
“We are not so much casual that we will sustain such charges against students if there is no evidence. We will absolutely drop it. But we need to be confirmed that there is no evidence to back this charge,” said Aligarh’s senior police officer Akash Kulhari.
The police action had drawn widespread criticism from the opposition while Mayawati called it an example of “state terror”.
Meanwhile, former CM Mehbooba Mufti accused the state of freely using the controversial law against sedition. She tweeted: “Expected. But it does raise pertinent questions: 1) Was UP police in collusion with mediapersons who created a ruckus in AMU? 2) From JNU to AMU, why are students being targeted? Is it because they are educated enough not to fall for divisive politics?”
After the alleged attack on Mukesh Kumar Lodi took place, the University taking action on the incident later suspended eight students while extra security was placed in and around the campus as tempers rose in the region over the use of the anti-sedition law against the students.
