New UNICEF boss takes office

United Nation, May 01: Anthony Lake has been appointed as the new executive director of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) as he vows to improve children’s rights around the world.

Lake, who was a former US national security adviser, said on Saturday that he was excited to be joining UNICEF.

Lake was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to succeed Ann Veneman as head of the organization last month.

“Peace and security are the foundation of a world fit for children. Wars not only kill children, they breed disease and destroy economic hope,” said Lake.

The 71-year-old Lake served as national security adviser under former US president Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1997.

Lake also served for nine years on the Board of the US Fund for UNICEF, including as Chair of the Board from 2004 to 2007.
