Jerusalem, October 21: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to lead his people to peace with Israel.
“Peace with our Palestinian neighbours is possible but it requires leadership and courage from both sides,” Netanyahu yesterday told a conference in Jerusalem.
“Lead your people to peace,” Netanyahu said, addressing his remarks to Abbas. “Tell your nation that it is time to end the conflict once and for all.”
Netanyahu’s remarks come with Israelis and Palestinians struggling to reach an agreement that would allow them to return to peace talks, suspended in the wake of the December-January Gaza war.
Netanyahu said he had already told Israelis of the need for peace in a speech earlier in the year when he accepted the need for a Palestinian state along side Israel.
Now, he said, it was Abbas’ turn.
