New Delhi, December 22: As per the law the Dowry is the payment in cash or/and kind by the bride’s family to the groom’s family. This definition is seriously flawed. In fact thedowry is a kind of aid given to the couple at the time of marriage.
The bride gets dowry from her family, and the groom gets dowry from his family in the form of property. Most of the time the dowry that the boys gets from his family is far more than the dowry that a girl gets from her family.
Most of the cases that are filed under dowry killing are found to be suicide cases. Its a universal truth that suicide are more common than homicide. In america the ratio is 5:3. The main reason of suicides are arrange marriages. As people tend to marry at the age of 26-28, their personality is alredy fully developed and they resist to change according to their partner.
The law to stop all this has only added fuel to this problem. The dowry law is heavily misused. It is just not reasonable that a man would kill his wife for dowry, if he indeed can kill someone for money he would kill others rather than his own wife. There is no justification why the entire family of the groom is jailed as its the duty of the husband only to protect his wife, even the kids are sometimes jailed which creates hatred. The problem has become so severe that people have started taking marriages as a headache. It must change.
