Mumbai, September 02: In the backdrop of 26/11 terror strikes, transport authorities here have decided to equip the newly introduced buses with bullet and blast proof window panes.
“For the first time in the country, public buses in Mumbai will have window panes that will be bulletproof, blast proof, fire proof and will ensure passenger safety,” said Harvinder Suri, an official of the company entrusted with the task of fixing such glasses.
The Brihanmumbai Electric Transport Undertaking Standing Committee has cleared the proposal to fix bulletproof windows on 250 ‘King-Long’ and 20 air-conditioned buses run by BEST.
“The city has witnessed many untoward incidents in the past including terror attacks. The bulletproof glasses will help us during such incidents,” Standing Committee Chairperson of BEST Dilip Patel said.
The project will cost Rs 2 crore, he said.
